Blood Oath

Domaine Jean-Louis Chave

Hermitage Syrah 1990

And then this happened. Oh my days! Opened prior to dinner and enjoyed over the course of a few hours. The 1990 pours a deep garnet color with a translucent core; medium viscosity with moderate staining of the tears and some sediment. On the nose, the wine is vinous with notes of powerful ripe and desiccated brambles, dried purple flowers, beef blood, leather and mushrooms and earth. On the palate, the wine is dry and structure is still going strong with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose, to quote “Squints”, the finish goes on, FOR-EV-ER. A monument. Drink now through 2040. — 13 days ago

@Shay A yeah man…this slapped. I’ve had the good fortune of drinking the ‘88 and ‘89 rouge and all three very special…but the ‘90 takes it to a new place

@Peter Sultan @Somm David T I still can hardly believe it.

Gemtree Vineyards

Dragon's Blood Shiraz 2020

Deep ruby color; black cherries, oak, and blackberry jam on the nose; high acidity; high tannins; tastes like blackberry sauce, sweet tabacco, sassafras(I think), and a hint of camphor with a long fruity finish. It has a little bit of a children's cough medicine flavor at the end. It's not enough to be bad. I really like this wine, but it's enough to knock my rating down a point. — 2 years ago

Château de Beaucastel

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhône Blend

Nose of black tea, portobello, baked plum and soft, unctuous cherry. Kirsch-chocolate, blood orange, French roast, marigold, ferromagnesian elements. Coffee, baking chocolate, black cherry skin, cigar smoke, venison jerky, char, cassis, and vine charcoal.

Domaine Tempier

Bandol Rosé Blend 2019

Glowing salmon rose gold. Smells like sour peachy-O's and blood orange. Still very full of life, equal parts cream and acid, fruity with herbs on the periphery.

Consistently wonderfully predictable.

Granit 60 Vieilles Vignes Cornas Syrah 2018

First bottle of a case, curious how this is developing.

Typical syrah notes pour out of the decanter. The palate shows an obviously young wine but it is drinking already very well. Red and Puple fruit, polished tannins. Blood, iron stones.

Réserve Vin de Pays de Vaucluse Red Rhone Blend 2016

Effusive, soulful, brimming with delicious fruit and goût de terroir to keep you engaged for hours. Ripe black raspberry, stewed red plum, blood orange, juniper, white pepper, cinnamon, nori, menthol, cool/damp earth, black tea, potpourri, lavender pastilles. This well seated, its fruit and structure are generous where they need to be and restrained at just the right point, certainly expressing the 2016 vintage perfectly right now. Such a great compliment with paella. — 4 years ago

Chaillot Cornas Syrah 2012

Shay A
9.5

Opened for a buddy’s birthday, alongside a 2005 Tatty Comtes, 2015 Cristal, 2018 Realm Falstaff and 2023 Kobayashi M/R.

I still remember my first Allemand seven years ago and how it immediately reeled me in and every bottle since has been the exact same. The rusticity and feral nature of Cornas is why for me, as a Syrah fanboy, it’s the best and most pure region for this wonderful grape.

Removed cork about an hour before pouring. Initial notes of olive, black pepper spice and herbs, some smoked meat and a brief blood-orange citrus aromatic. Deep red/black in the glass. There’s a layer of brett (low level, adds to the intrigue, doesn’t detract) and lavender bouquet before peppered strip, herbs, raspberries and blackberries, and a sanguine tang hit the palate. Not sure of whole cluster use here but seems there’s a little bit (which I love). Wild but civilized. Medium-plus bodied with beautiful acidity and plenty of tannin for this to cruise years. On the early side, but these are so hard to resist in every phase.

I wish I could drink this every day. I need to find a wine of similar style at a better price point.

Jean Foillard

Côte du Py Morgon Gamay 2022

🍷Cheers to this compelling Morgon crafted by one of the region’s luminaries!✨

We’re talking about the ‘Côte du Py’ Morgon (Gamay Noir) by the revered Jean Foillard.

This Gamay hails from Morgon – a “Cru” within the broader appellation of Beaujolais – with a reputation for producing structured & age-worthy wine.

👁️ This wine is medium ruby in color, like a gemstone with the delicate haze you’d expect from an unfiltered wine.

👃 The aromas & flavors are perfumed with ripe red and black cherry, wild strawberry, blueberry, pomegranate, blood orange, mulberry, rosehips, hibiscus, lilac, black tea, rooibos, black licorice, star anise, potting soil, gunflint, & clove.

👄 On the palate, it’s dry with vibrant acidity, warming alcohol, a medium body, fine, ripe tannins, followed by a persistent finish.

In sum, this is a captivating, soulful, & expressive wine; a beautiful representation of Morgon, so deliciously drinkable now, with its layers of lush fruit, florals, & spice, while demurely holding the spine, structure, & intensity to age…

I can imagine it gaining mushroom, earthy, leather, & cured meat dimensions with time.

It offers power and elegance; a wine to sip, savor, & appreciate.

Domaine Jean-Claude Marsanne

Saint-Joseph Syrah 2019

Although this is still a young wine, I am glad to say that after atleast half-a-dozen recent disappointments with wines from @SaintJoseph this one is both exciting and of great quality. Dark fruit, spices, meat, blood, mint, and some flower petals; a rich, tannic and food-craving wine. — 4 years ago
