Bodegas Navalon

Gran Reserva Anciano Años 10 Years Oak Matured Valdepeñas Tempranillo 2008

2008, oops. Either it’s good I accidentally opened this on my own or I’m mean. Needs manchego dang it, and all I’ve got is this hobo pizza a made. Not past it, funky in the right ways. And it may have been cheap.

I hour later after said pizza: Weirdly, it’s all chocolate cherry.

La Falaise Coteaux du Languedoc La Clape Red Blend 2018

Stunning. That’s that! Oops you need to let it breathe for an hour or more — 3 years ago

Château Les Tuileries

Cru Bourgeois Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend 2011

10 years of aging (oops lost in the cellar) has treated this 2011 surprisingly well it has lost the smoky notes I tasted a couple years ago and in its place is an earthier blackberry red currant which is quite pleasant. Still has a great silky mouth feel. I decanted this for 2 hrs, tasting every so often and I'm not 100% sure when it was drinking it's best.
Drinking 2011 in 2021. 8.9/3.9

Château Simian

les Grandes Grenachieres d'Hippolyte Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2007

Oops. This is one of those rare instances that I didn’t realize what I was opening and what I paid for it. This is not your average Monday night wine. As I was drinking it (semi blind) I was thinking this was darn good. One of the best CDP I’ve had in quite a while. Sexy and stunning without flaws. I wish I had more of this! — 4 years ago

Bourgogne Chardonnay 2017

Oops, forgot I had this so recently. Oh well, very different from previous btls and not nearly so oak dominant. Definitely ripe with sweet apple and meyer lemon, but well-integrated lemon chiffon. On the palate: fantastic acidity, sweet citrus, soft mint, velvety mouthfeel, and a tarragon, sweet apple finish. Without a doubt my best btl so far, but still nothing like the 14, 16 or 18. — 2 years ago

Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona

Pianrosso Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2017

2017 vintage. Was dead set against picking up any 2017 vintage Brunello, regardless of producer. That aged well. Oops. Clearly evident concentration, length, balance and ripeness. Better luck saying “over my dead body” and actually meaning it tomorrow. 3.7.23. — a year ago

I had a few Tuscan ‘17s early on that were scorchy and astringent, so I’ve generally passed on them. But that’s not to say there aren’t exceptions!

Wittmann

Aulerde Großes Gewächs Riesling 2014

Oops, forgot I had this in April. Drank alongside a '14 Roulot Bourg Blanc, and paired with a pasta with morel and scallion (light) cream sauce, with some seared scallops on top. This was far and away the better pairing, but it was fun to contrast the two '14s. With the cream sauce, the perceived acidity was perfect for my palate, so an excellent showing, really showcasing the minerality and citrus. Yeah it's Tuesday, but many pandemic-related restrictions were eased today here in cali. What that actually means remains to be seen... — 3 years ago
