The nose is pleasant but a bit musty and tired, like I’ve rented a 150 year-old farmhouse on the coast of Ireland for a quiet weekend away. Upstairs, in an old sock drawer, is an ancient bag of potpourri containing dried herbs, crusty rose petals, and lumpy brittle strawberries that mingle with the peat and damp hay drifting through the air. The palate is fresher, brighter, the same but somehow newer, like the proprietor of the old house, a 30-ish strawberry blond named Fiona, whose great-great-grandfather built this place with his bare hands, has burst through the front door to greet me with a wink and wry smile. Like her, this wine is feminine but not delicate, stout but not burly, complex but not ostentatious. I’ll spare you any further indulgence of this tortured metaphor, but this wine is nearly everything you want in a mature Barolo – the acid is bracing in a good way, the tannin fully resolved, the balance exquisite, the length prodigious. — 6 days ago

Very pretty and complex nose of spice, florals, chestnut, old wood and baking spices, cherry flower. Palate is supple and open with terrific sappy fruit and energy. Deep fruit. As it opens the spice becomes so intoxicating. Cuts a swath across the palate and has dazzling purity and freshness. Really leaves such a fresh impression on the long finish. Big tannins and lovely mid season cherry and spices in the mid and fan onto on the finish. — 20 hours ago

È! Orange Nascetta Blend

Like the Calcarius CA wines, this liter beats expectations. It’s my first of the E!‘s from Cellario and it’s surprisingly delicate and tame for a wine named Orange. It pours a hazy yellow and has pretty aromatics of spiced ginger, apricot, peaches, and flowers. 5 days of skin in amphora pits this somewhere between light and viscous and maybe both at once. — 12 days ago

Terre Moreniche Ghemme Nebbiolo 2009

I had guarded expectations because I was not a fan of the 08, but this is quite good. Deep nose has deep old dark library furniture scent, gravel, warm spice, dark macerated cherries, dried roses, a little tar. In short, everything you want in an aged Nebbiolo. Soft, good acids, tannins very fine-grained and almost fully integrated. I wouldn’t age this much longer though, because it’s almost fully tertiary. — 14 days ago

Tremendous color. Looks like Chateau Simone rose. Watermelon, strawberry, spice, a lipstick like intensity, spice, earth, florals and mineral. Deep cherry. Cherry lozenge. Floral. Citrus and Tree bark after some air. A gorgeous nose. Palate is ripe, juicy, full of tannins and structure. Terrific acids, man is this zingy and fresh and even has some citric zest to it. Tannins build up on the finish. Very serious Langhe Nebbiolo. — 20 hours ago

The 2015 Carema Etichetta Nera is absolutely stellar. In many vintages, I prefer the Etichetta Bianca, but in 2015, the Etichetta Nera (Black Label) has an extra kick of freshness and body, while the oak is as well-balanced as I have ever seen in this bottling. All of that adds up to a Carema that is positively dazzling from the very first taste. Dark cherry, plum, spice, leather, menthol and licorice develop in the glass, but it is the wine's vertical energy and overall balance that leave the longest impression. Dives Langhe Sauvignon Blanc 2018

The nose is spicy and intense, while showing all of the textbook nuances of Sauvignon Blanc, displaying gooseberry, grassy sour lime and hints of kiwi, as smoky mineral tones develop in the glass.  It’s wonderfully textural on the palate, both sweet and sour, as the cheeks pucker from zesty citrus-tinged acids, yet there’s a ripeness to the fruit here that creates beautiful contrasts.  The finish is long, perfumed and full of tension, leaving the mouth watering for another sip.  The 2018 G.B. Burlotto Dives is fermented in large acacia wood barrels which gives it so much complexity and presence on the palate. — 7 days ago
