Domaine Armand Rousseau

Clos St. Jacques Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Pinot Noir

Mystery achievement, don’t breathe down my neck, no. Excellent fill. 95% saturated cork. Labels a bit yellowed. Decanted and tasted after 15 mins, 45 mins and 1.5 hours. Big, chunky sed. Funk in the immediately decanted nose that blew off after a couple of decanter swirls. A bit of aged color with noticeable meniscus in the glass. Spearmint and orange peel in the nose. Cinnamon and spicy clove kicked in the back door to crash the party. Remarkable concentration in the nose and taste throughout the 1.5 hours. This had a fantastic, 40+ second finish with plenty of viable tannins still maintaining decorum. So yeah, the mystery…the shoulder vintage label was missing and vintage nowhere to be found on the cork, foil or front/back labels. Came from a top-notch cellar. Based on the yellowing of the label, cork saturation, fill, color/meniscus, flavors concentration/structure, initially thinking it to be either a 1978 or 1985 offering. Going with 1978 based on the obvious/large meniscus, amount of sediment, marvelous concentration for the performance and yellowing of the labels. Regardless, arguably the best Burg I’ve had in the last dozen months and def the best 1er Cru. Whatever vintage it was, has another decade-easy-rocking this hard. 3.20.24. — 8 days ago

Marcassin

Marcassin Vineyard Pinot Noir

2004 vintage. Decanted and tasted after an hour. This was fuller and more complex than any of the other < 2010 Marcassin (Marcassin Vyd) Pinots I’ve had lately. Big, staying power. 3.5.24. — 23 days ago

Yamhill Cuvée Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 2019

Elegant Ruby color with red fruit aromas and gentle floral spice, aged for about 12 months in French oak, signature blend of grapes from Dundee Hills, Eola-Amity Hills, and Yamhill-Carlton AVA's. On the palate flavors of cherry and black raspberry with notes of herb, licorice and wet stone notes. Soft dusty tannins on a long finish ending with fruit, spice and earthy notes. Very Nice! California Pinot Noir 2022

Pale ruby in color; cherries, raspberries, and baking spices on the nose; medium plus acidity; low tannins; tastes like strawberries, black cherries, crushed gravel, and a hint of vanilla with a long finish. Nellie says it's ok. I like it. Better after decanting for 30 minutes. Tastes a little sweet. I think there's some residual sugar, but it may just be the fruit flavors. It's definitely a fruit bomb. — 9 days ago

Bollinger

La Grande Année Brut Champagne Blend 1996

From magnum, the 1996 Grande Année pours a brilliant pale gold color with a persistent mousse. Initially, the wine showed more oxidative notes but it freshened up considerably with air (in fact, a tiny amount was leftover for the next morning and it remained brilliant, racy even!). On the nose, notes of almond, citrus, honey, chalky minerals and brioche. On the palate, wine is developing with absolutely brilliant acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and zippy. The 1996 vintage is simply amazing. Here we are, 28 years past vintage and this bright and full of life! Granted, it’s a magnum, but still. Drink now with patience or enjoy through 2046+. — 11 days ago
