The Big N

Dakota Shy

T-E-N Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

I love Dakota Shy wines, and this is an excellent one. Decanted for several hours. Inky dark purple. Full-bodied, rich, and complex. Dark chocolate, plums, cassis, and a hint of vanilla. Long finish. Fabulous now, but still has a lot of cellaring potential. — 16 days ago

Harlan Estate

Napa Valley Proprietary Red Blend 1997

Liquorice, graphite over black and dark blue fruit. Fresh and powerful. Big but at the same time lithe and restrained in delivering layers of secondary flavours - asian spice and dried earth. Phenomenal. — a month ago

Caymus Vineyards

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Drinking a 3L from 2013 in late ‘24. Love the big format bottles and aging potential. This could go a lot longer I think but is also fine to drink now.

Standard Caymus flavors and aromas that made the brand known. Dark inky crimson color. Blueberries and blackberry fruit mixed with vanilla alongside the tell-tale signs of wet band-aid. Great tannins, medium-to-big acidity, good long finish. Really nice.

The Boxer Shiraz

One of the faves for Shiraz. Big, bold, yet easy to drink. Punchy with black and red fruits, not to tannic. — 21 days ago

Fess Parker

The Big Easy Santa Barbara County Syrah Blend 2020

This is very nice. Velvety mouthfeel, a lot of fruit, berry jam, some herbs and pepper, not much tannin. I’d definitely buy again. This is a crowd pleaser bigger red. — 2 months ago

Yarra Yering

Dry Red N°1 Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2022

The final wine at the Yarra Yering dinner in Brisbane last Thursday night 3rd October 2024 with winemaker Sarah Crowe. Fitting that Dry Red No. 1 should be the final wine - arguably the Jewel in the Crown. Initial aromatic impressions are gorgeous. This is the 50th vintage of Dry Red No. 1. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Brief notes - blackberry, aniseed and bay leaf. A medium bodied Cabernet with M+ intensity and finishing with fine boned tannin structure. Power with poise, concentration with finesse. Will live for 20 years plus. I have been buying on an irregular basis for many years. The 1990 was a highlight. I asked Sarah, who was Chairman of the Royal Sydney Wine Show this year to compare 3 of the main Cabernet producing areas in Australia - Yarra Valley leafy fragrance, Coonawarra Mint, and Margaret River herbaceousness. At Restaurant Dan Arnold. — 3 months ago
