Paolo Bea dinner at Semo. All wines were prepared by opening and slow-ox, prior to service. Abbreviated notes due to the setting. The 2017 Pipparello pours a garnet color with funky Montmorency cherry, red carnations, and balsamic notes. Wonderful structure and delicious with the quail. Drink now with patience through 2037. The 2018 Montefalco Rosso captivates with a spicy mix of autumnal cherry sauce and plums complemented by hints of camphor and minty herbs. This is fleshy and fruity on the palate, yet balance is nicely maintained by juicy acidity, as a chalky mineral stain slowly saturates. Subtle tannins linger through the mentholated finale, as hints of licorice and bitter cherry taper off. (Eric Guido, Vinous, November 2022)

Very well “built” wine. Nicely balanced with good tannins. The taste reaches reasonably far into the palate. It lacks a bit of character. No fruit jumps out at you, and you don’t find yourself following different tasting themes. It sits there, happy in its craft. Goes well with red meat and rich pasta. — 4 years ago

Cherry, raspberry, currant, vanilla, blackberry and oak. Medium-bodied and moderate tannins. — 5 years ago
Weird fizz. A little funk which I don’t like but jeff loves. It’s a guy thing. Finish has nice grip. — 6 years ago
Deep red color with a hint of purple. Medium legs, medium body and very balanced without any sediment. First nose of cherry with a hint of violet and spice. Easy drinking with cherry, raspberry, red fruits with a bit of earthiness and a hint of vanilla. Polished and finishes beautifully.

Great wine, but not worth the price. — 5 years ago
Rich flavours of smokey spices, saw dust, tobacco and chocolate, hints of rhubarb, strawberries. Soft, coffee-like tannins, gentle on the palate, light acidity. Lingers gently. Very nice. — 6 years ago

Other commenters may not have prepared themselves for the sheer tannic power of sagrantino, even with only 15% in this blend. Pours a deep brick red veering toward brown, showing significant aging. But ready to drink, probably at its peak. Still, needs time to breathe. Strong saddle leather and horsetail (the plant) aromas backed by roasted game and a bouquet of spices that reminds me of a chocolate-heavy mole. — a month ago
