St. Donat

Château Calon-Ségur

Le Marquis Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 2018

2018 vintage. Yes, the “green”
note from the Vinous review is there but it is very high/front palate. Still oodles of structure, fruit, balance and drinkability that minimizes it. Starts as green bell pepper initially, then trends toward mint. Second bottle in a little over a week. First bottle was a monster. Second bottle a little more restrained. Where exactly does the truth lie? In the middle as usual? More deep investigation required…**EDIT**Green note gone the next day/24 hrs later after leaving half the bottle in the fridge w/o any preservation techniques other than putting the cork back in the bottle/refrigeration.

Château Lafon-Rochet

Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 2018

2018 vintage. Last tasted 8.3.21. A little less overtly rich and smoky…slightly less body and more polish. Had I been blind tasting, woulda guessed 2015 Château Meyney. Still super smooth and über-drinkable. Starting to pick up a hint of tannic resistance. So good. — 4 days ago

Blend of 49% Merlot, 43% Cab Sauv, 4% Cab Franc and 4% Petit Verdot, aged in 30% new and 70% one-year old barrels for 12 months, deep Ruby with aromas of red/black fruits and notes of tobacco and earthy herbs. On the palate flavors of Black cherry, raspberry and currants, light cigar spice, cacao and herb notes. Firm approachable tannins, long finish ending with fruit and earthy mineral character. Very nice! — 11 days ago

Château Léoville Barton

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2003

2003 vintage. Decanted for approx 3 hours. The usual LB nose. A little pickled mushroom/forest floor flavor profile off the bat, then settled into dark plum and cocoa powder shortly thereafter. Light-medium body and slightly “bigger” than expected at this point. Lots of stuffing still. It’s in the sweet spot/top of the bell curve currently…seems like it could sustain that momentum for at least another 4-5 years. — 3 days ago

Château Cos d'Estournel

Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 1982

Back to 1982 and a stunning Cos d’Estournel. Beautiful old claret with tons of character - tobacco, cedar and blue fruits on the nose. Tannins completely resolved and notes of blue fruits, tobacco and hoisin rounded out the palate. Really special as always to open an 82. — 2 hours ago

Château Pavie Macquin

Saint-Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2018

Was uninspiring yesterday but today it is much better. Waaayyyy too young, but I had to open a bottle from the arrival to see how it was. Will evolve nicely as the tannins mellow over the years. This is an excellent wine in the making. — 2 days ago

Château Barde-Haut

Saint-Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2014

ESF
9.2

Inky and really dense & tight - we had a small glass first night and decided to try again the next. Initially reductive, finally yielded ton of herbaceous accented black fruit, licorice, leather & tobacco, some pepper & spice and distinct vein of minerality. Classic Right Bank, just elegant & rich, broad & fat across mid-palate. Some kirsch liqueur, vanilla & Xmas spices flavors. Stayed away from Bordeaux of late due to cost & bottle variation but this came highly recommended and satisfied the itch. Young, this has stuffing for the long haul. — 2 days ago

Château Villemaurine

St. Émilion Grand Cru Classé Red Bordeaux Blend 2015

2015 vintage. Forward deep plum and molasses nose. Medium-heavy body. The molasses and plum + orange tea, chalk dust and a slight Sauternes accent. Interesting. Seems like it’s going through some things currently but still willing to please. Likely to lose some weight and be in a slightly different place in 1.5-3 years. — 6 days ago
