Showing little sign of age, this 2004 CNdP is a beautiful, robust wine with fine tannins, fresh acidity and a sweet glimmer of liquorice and chocolate alongside a notable gamey character. Mellow, rich, harmonious and brilliant all round. The finish is ultimately very savoury and long. This could age decades. Wonderful now, but in 20, 30, even 40 years time this would no doubt sing. The Perrin family use all permitted varietals in their Beaucastel CNdP, but the predominant blend of 30% Mourvèdre, 30% Grenache and 10% Syrah is masterful here. — 7 years ago

I’m thinking about starting a Grateful Journal. I’ve heard that writing down things you’re thankful for 5-10 mins before sleep helps you actually get the most from your sleep and also helps you wake up more energized. Tonight, my journal will note how thankful I am for friends who share great wine. @Frank this young beauty is sultry. Like making love on a hot summer’s night with the windows open. Opens with a pleasant earthy musk, meaty and gamey notes, and some fresh herbs, garrigue. Luscious and thicky-thick on the palate (see: Nelly). The red and blue fruits sing in wonderful harmony with the earthy, unadulterated tension just below the surface. Spicy, mineral, savory, and clean fruit all at once. Many years ahead. The 1980 vintage in Sauternes was challenging to say the least but Chateau D’Yquem has crafted one of the shining stars of the vintage. Aromatically quite expressive, the Sauternes takes the lead with candied ginger, lychee, apricot and shades of bananas foster that all sing in unison. The palate comes off with an unusual combination of sweet and sour tones, with a strong vein of salinity that races through the core of quince, sour apricot, vanilla creme brûlée and roasted pineapple flavors. Texturally elegant, this is far less on the unctuous side of D’Yquem, but has a beautiful feeling of refinement, freshness and elegance. Still humming at the forty year mark, the 1980 D’Yquem will provide drinking enjoyment for at least another five to ten years. Drink 2020-2027- 94 — 6 years ago

Very affordable Giggy. That tastes delicious! Normally the French grenache based wines I drink sing as a pop n pour. With air this one developed more weight. Extremely complex with herbs and chocolate notes on the finish. I love me some CDP, but Gigondas is still the value play. — 8 years ago

Last year I wrote:"Just lovely. Some pepper on the nose. Gamey while it was cold. Then it turned to silk with notes of leather, cassis, and soft tannins. Elegant."

Dried fruits and herbs. Quite easy drinking with a nice integrated structure and finish at first. On the label they say uncork 3 hours before serving and they’re not kidding. An hour after opening it was too simple a wine. A few hours later it’s starting to sing more. Seems also more structured? — 5 years ago

Dark rubi robe, nose of spices, crushed roses and dark cherries. Medium bodied, very fresh, balanced and complex but also bold structure, this is a joy of a wine done in the classical way. An enfant now but getting closer to drinking window. Give it 3 more years in bottle. It will sing. Enthusiastically recommended. — 5 years ago

Beautiful aromas. Nose alone is a 9.4. Color is quite translucent in the glass - looks quite “traditional” in that sense. After a 2 hour decant, the fruit starts to sing a good deal. Tannins are there but on the more integrated side for Barolo. A touch restrained overall, but very nice. Excellent refreshing finish with good acid.

Moving up to 9.3 after another hour of air. Suggest decanting for 3-4 hours. Beautiful and seamless at this point. — 6 years ago

Had the powerful, complex, masterful 2010 at the end of a dinner party opening 2 bottles, and finishing 1 leaving another for the next day. The second bottle was partialy full when it was sealed with a vacuum stopper. It was even better the next day! The 2010 is starting to sing! BE SURE TO LET IT BREATHE FOR SEVERAL HOURS (if you can, wait a few more years) — 8 years ago
