Rusty Blade

Continuum

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2012

Happy Thanksgiving!!

Overrated and overpriced. 1+hr decant, probably needed more. Very hot nose with plums. Massive tannins and hits the palate like a razor blade. Earthy with plums and prunes. Not my style. Medium depth and finish.

Anyone want my last bottle?

@Paul J : Just checked my CT notes and I opened this ‘12 almost two years ago and it was corked. Was hoping I could give you some hope but my only experience was flawed!

Yeah, the Continuum's always run lean and spicy. Like zero percent body fat. Nothing to grasp...a sheer red/Cabernet cliff that few can climb.

My experience with this wine was the complete opposite. I have a few 07’s kicking around and they were plush and dense when I last took a look…

Château Haut-Bergey

Pessac-Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend 2002

Very cool to try this vintage. The color has gone to a very rusty red amber and almost a brown rim. (bummer you can’t upload more than one photo) Olive and earth on the nose. Very savory V8 notes of tomato, tomato bisque , black pepper. The palate still has great acidity, very rounded, just a nice lingering finish and almost feels high in heat even though this sits at 12.5% — 4 years ago

Wowie. Dark, ripe, dry tannins, deep red fruits and iron. Showing some secondary aromas and flavors (espresso, rusty metal and earth) but tons of fruit to boot. This is in a great place but will keep evolving beautifully for years I suspect — 5 years ago

I’m suspicious of 2011s but this sounds delicious!

@Tom Casagrande I’ve found quite a few 11’s to be really nice right now. Honestly you can’t go wrong with salvioni anyway. This was damn good

Côte-Rôtie Syrah 2001

Light garnet-ruby. Rusty, musty nose. Olive brine, dried blueberry. Long, juicy, bloody palate, with reverberating acidity and prickly tannins. Hints of roasted nuts and cocoa. So alive on the palate. A real treat. — 5 years ago

@romo Interesting. How so?

Look at your profile. This is an outlier. I feel same about Cote Rotie as a “real treat”.

@romo Fair enough. I def think of Cote Rotie as a special occasion wine but not an outlier.

Gentle nose of blackberry, raspberry, cassis, mocha, steeped red tea, leather, and hint of rusty iron. Medium to full body. Plush and warm on the palate with good acidic structure. Gripping tannins have started to mellow.

‘12 started a great run of excellent Napa vintages from the last decade. This just entered its drinking window and will continue to evolve over the next 8-10 year.

Vitiano Rosso Umbria Sangiovese Blend 2012

More aged wine. Seems to be tonight’s theme. This France meets Italy in the blend. Label says it was $12. Not sure where I got it though. Dark maroon with a rusty edge. Aromas are the dust, smoke and old book smells of older Cab/Merlot. Maybe a slight whiff of ball-point pen ink. Flavors are also aged/oxidized. But just slightly. Still has fresh berry-cherry vibes. Bittersweet with a hint of charred meats or tar. This is a fun blend that aged well and has an elegance making it well worth the $12 it cost me. — 3 years ago
