Oakville Merlot 2022

It is time for some Merlot on this #MerlotThursday. Let's bring Merlot back!

Dark ruby in color with a wide reddish rim.

Fruity nose of blue and black fruits with light cedar, earth, herbs, milk chocolates and black pepper.

Full-bodied and elegant with medium acidity.

Dry on the palate with black plums, cooked cherries, blackberries, cedar, licorice, chocolates, spices, coffee, light earth, herbs, eucalyptus and tobacco leaf.

Long finish with fine grained tannins and tangy cherries.

This is a delicious Merlot from Oakville in Napa valley. Nicely balanced and complex, soft and elegant.

Still young, but already enjoyable even by itself. Will continue to age nicely in the next 15 years. Showing good potential to become a 94+ point wine.

Alcohol is nicely integrated already, smooth and engaging.

I had the 2021 vintage not too long ago, and it is very consistent.

Good by itself as a sipping wine, and will also pair nicely with food.

A blend of 90% Merlot with 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Aged in (50% new) French Oak barrels.

14.9% alcohol by volume.

92 points.

$90.

Little Hill Pinot Noir 2018

We had a vertical tasting of 2018 and 2020 Little Hill Single Vineyard PN. Both have similar bouquets and palates. Black cherry and minerality. 2020 is a little more floral. 2018 has a more darker tone; and that is good. Both have nice mouthfeels with smoothed out tannins. 2018 is a little more velvety. Both very good. It seems these PN need more time in the bottle — 7 months ago

Dijon Clone Freedom Hill Vineyard Chardonnay 1999

This aged Oregon Chardonnay is still showing quite well, some honeyed aromas, but solid fruit and acidity, a medium-long finish, this is the first of 6 bottles I found in a box with non-Chardonnays, how well this is showing tonight gives me hope it will continue to drink well for a few more years, kudos to Mark Vlossak!! — a month ago

Volcanic Hill Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 1998

Decant and pour. An amazing still dark garnet with bricking. On the nose: subtle notes of dark fruit, worn leather, herbaceous, pencil shavings, mint. Taste: savory, silky, elegant wine with some dried cherry/red plum, currants, tobacco, spice, earth, coffee grounds and a medium plus finish. YUM!!! Drinking beautifully for its age on this rain for an hour cool afternoon in Napa. — 4 months ago

Freedom Hill Vineyard Pinot Noir 2021

Initially a bit closed, after two hours in the decanter this really opens up. Black cherry and sage come through on the nose and continue onto the palate with additional notes of cassis, bay leaf, and cloves. Has a persistent finish with herbs, spice, and black tea lingering on the palate. The herbal and spice flavors were really vibrant when paired with basil pesto pasta and mushrooms. Medium+ acidity, medium+ body, and medium tannins. This is the 2021 vintage. — 5 months ago

@Joel Lara Nice write-up. This is consistently their most difficult Pinot offering to "figure out." Oodles of subtleties vs a few markers/demonstrative tendencies. NOT for the average Pinot Noir drinker.

@Scott@Mister A’s-San Diego that’s interesting because as I was drinking it I was thinking about how different it was to a lot of pinots I’ve had. The savory elements are not as loud as they are in other good pinots, but I still found them an intriguing backdrop to the beautiful fruit. The tannin really helped add some complexity on the finish too. I also bought a 2019 Temperance Hill, so looking forward to seeing how that compares.

Pritchard Hill Estate Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

From magnum. Partially poured into a decanter and enjoyed over the course of a couple days. Best on Day 2. The 2015 Pritchard Hill pours a deep ruby/purple with an opaque core; medium+ viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing and richly fruited with powerful, heady notes of cassis, blackberries, plum, purple flowers, tobacco, cocoa, some star anise and fine warm spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and the texture is luxurious. Classic Pritchard Hill character and surely a candidate for top vineyard status if the US were to ever adopt a classification status. There’s a long future here, especially in this larger format. Drink now with patience through 2055. — 21 days ago

Hard to say. The large format can skew things. I bet the 750’s are bangin

Nice but I'll always opt for the "Signature" offering for the price. Have tasted a decade's worth+ of the Pritchard Hill vehicle. A bit too plushy for me but the Signature is Baby Bear old school just right.

@Scott@Mister A’s-San Diego The Signature is great and most of the fruit is coming from Pritchard Hill anyway.

White Hill Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay 2024

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of 90min. The 2024 “White Hill” pours a pale straw color with medium viscosity. On the nose, the wine is developing with bright notes of star fruit, passion fruit, stone fruits, lemons, a touch of freshly struck matchstick, some white flowers and minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+ and slightly saline. I love the character of these wines. Really tasty stuff. Drink now through 2034+. — 3 months ago

Tychson Hill Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

Inky cab with purple-tinged blood blackness from rim to rim. Glass painter with star bright reflectivity. Viscous Frankenstein hair tears over glacial-carved canyon. Nose of black cherry, raisinated currant, light toast, lighter pepper, carnation, violet, licorice, blackberries with honey. Mouth-coating with a luxurious mouthfeel showing silky tannins with a modicum of grain. Cassis, graphite, baked blueberry, black currant. Sustain. Bold and unabashed.
