Don Melchor comes from a unique 313-acre vineyard planted on the rock soils of one of the Maipo River’s oldest terraces at the foot of the Andes Mountains, one of the world’s most celebrated terroirs for cabernet sauvignon.
The 2014 Don Melchor Puente Alto Vineyard gives both old world and new world expressions. This wine is full-bodied, rich, and elegant. Dark red fruit. Beautifully balanced. The vintage is 92% cabernet sauvignon and 8% cabernet franc. I recommend a healthy decant before enjoying.
If in Dallas right now, I recommend sitting with this one next to a fireplace. — 3 years ago
little bit of spice, then juice — 6 years ago
One of the great values in the left bank. Tobacco, cedar, pencil shavings, cassis, and blackberries. Very much classic old world Bordeaux, but with some more expressive fruit. Good concentration and length, per usual. — 6 years ago
Napa meets Europe. Old world character and ridiculously good. — 8 years ago
So beautiful and clear in its purpose, titillating on the nose and fulfilling its promises beyond. Balanced and velvety dark red fruit, hints of black tea and cassis but all in a more Old than New World Gestalt. Lots of secondary stuff emerging you just want to sip it slowly. If anybody wonders how well these age, track one down, it’s so worth it. Kudos @Cathy Corison for making this distinctive and enduring bottle! — 8 years ago
This is a big wine with a major manure factor on the nose! Palate is very old world and vegetal with herbs and wood shavings... still with bold tannins.. good legs. Classic, pure interpretation of Brunello! — 9 years ago
Dark fruit upfront then a old world dusty dry middle. Ending with a mild mild leather spicy finish — 3 years ago
For an old world Syrah, this is showing significant fruit: cranberry, black currant, and blackberry. Background aromas, however, shine through with smoked minerals, black pepper, leather, and vanilla.
I love the juicy, lengthy, peppery finish on this wine. — 5 years ago
Very new world style but with and old world texture. — 6 years ago
Old world, earthy, and delicious — 7 years ago
Legit. Old world. Texture and depth, yet lean. Pomegranate. Grapefruit. — 8 years ago
Old world needs new world tropical meets much-needed earth back down honey do but the rind of the honeydew pineapple slight creaminess not so much butter scotch on it more of a light butter sauce it’s very mild very beautiful delicate would pair well with cheese and a possibly seafood — 9 years ago
We had the 2006 Vintage on 7/27-28/24. A nice Old World, medium to full bodied wine with a long finish. Scents and a palate of blackberry, black cherry, plum, graphite and camphor. The tannins were fine and smoothed out with aeration. A very good wine. — 2 years ago
Bright scarlet color, mostly translucent. Red fruit, gravel stone, spice, dark earth, some tobacco and some leather. Fruit is somewhat faded but still present. I think the 85 LB is moving towards being past peak, but still delivers a nice old world experience. — 4 years ago
Mature, elegant, harmonious wine that has aged well. Distinctive tertiary notes in the wine give this a definite Old World personality despite having that classic core of fruit even restrained wines take on in Napa. I bet this was singing on its 20th Birthday. — 8 years ago
My 28th/29th/30th & 31st bottles of the beautiful 04 & @ £40 & they are still superb value for a stunning old world Rioja 👍 & keep getting better & better 😁

We had the 2007 on 9/14-15/25. A terrific aged Brunello. This had all the expected scents and tastes of a great Brunello. Black cherry, raspberry, leather, lavender and rose petals. Medium bodied and Old World. Tannins all smoothed out. — 9 months ago
