See my previous notes from last year. By all accounts, this bottle is an analog of the previous bottles I have enjoyed of the 2021 “Vie Erte”. This time, I was able to track the wine over three days and it never lost power. The fruit and structure are in harmonious balance. I am so excited to try this vintage when it begins to show some secondary characteristics…but I’m fully expecting to see exercise some serious patience. Straw gold color. Blend of Malvasia (45%), Rhein Riesling (40%) and Friulano (15%). Intensely floral on the nose with a hints of apricot, honey and a touch of petrol. Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of an hour. The 1996 Belle Epoque pours a deep straw color with a persistent mousse. On the nose, the wine is vinous with generous white peaches, raspberries, white tree flower, marzipan and minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long. The 1996 balance of acid and ripeness is so special. This gained energy with air. Drink now through 2036. Disgorged May of 2004. — 2 days ago
