Real treat: RRV SB w/bottle age - fattened up nicely, super expressive nose of tropical fruit mingled w/grass & hay, snap pea some green citrus. Added weight gave it heft juxtaposed w/vibrant acidic backbone. Just flat out delicious, generous really strutting its stuff. — 2 years ago

Krug

Grande Cuvée Brut Champagne Blend

MJ’s cellar is awe-inspiring. Once again, an absolutely pristine old wine from his cold, cold cellar - a 1980’s Krug Grande Cuvée! A first for me and gosh it blew me away. Still so fresh and energetic, yet rich and concentrated, all intensified by time. Complex aromas of orange peel, dried apricot, dehydrated apples, lemon oil, marzipan, and a touch of sherry. Full-bodied, textured, and deep on the palate, with mellow honeyed notes mind-bogglingly juxtaposed against zesty citrus notes; some cream and sweet spices, high acidity, and heaps of salinity. Gosh was this good. — 4 years ago

Lowering the temp (assuming humidity is still high) should only slow the aging process.

@Jay Kline Agreed. Can be a bad thing too if you want to see the wines develop especially if one has mostly newer wines. Considering how deep and old some cellars in Europe can be, I can see why they’d want it so cold. Often they don’t get to choose how cold they are too, being natural cellars. Haha. @Norman Gennaro I keep mine at about the same. I think how the wine travelled and where it came from probably has a bigger impact these days.

@Aaron Tan 💯. My cellar is passive and I’ve had to learn its limitations (and strengths) through years of experience cellaring wine within it.

Palo Blanco Valle de la Orotava Listan Blanco 2019

Bottle variation? Vintage? Transport? This was just so different from the 18’ Palo Blanco, which was a masterclass in minerality. While still mineral, I felt the 19’ Palo Blanco was more about oxidation than anything else.

Drank over 2 days. Straight out the gates, the rather dark golden colour was already foreboding of the poorer difference. Drank like an oxidative-styled Chenin, which I’ve never really been keen on - light flinty reduction on the nose, bruised apples, salinity, medium-high acidity that has a crescendo quality to it, long finish. After a 6 hour slow oxidation, the reduction on the nose melded into a rather savoury olive-like note. Definitely more intriguing at this stage with notes of bruised apples, honey, hay, white florals, sea salt, musk, and a herbaceous touch. There’s an oiliness to the palate which juxtaposed nicely with the feisty acidity. Gained copious volatility and lost vitality the night after.

Fell below expectations after the brilliant 18’, but wasn’t a bad experience in itself. Will check on other bottles down the track.

Been quite awhile since I’ve had this wine and it is aging beautifully: not much darkening in color or added weight: less stone fruit & more minerals framed by honey. Bracing acidity juxtaposed w/silky mouthfeel w/slightest bit of RS on finish. Impeccable balance & harmony — 5 years ago

Clos de la Coulée de Serrant Savennières Chenin Blanc 2011

Pop and pour. As usual, overfilled btl and some mold on the saturated cork under the capsule. Just lovely. Pure honey, oxidative lemon, a soft touch of lanolin. Golden in color. On the palate: fantastic acidity and richness. Intense sour tangerine, lemon oil, confited peach, juxtaposed against spice and white pepper. Fantastic complexity and in an excellent place right now. — 3 years ago

Dark ruby, semi-transparent, dusty cherries in turned Earth, bramble, pepper, flowery violets and exotic spices. Med bodied, impressive balance & bearing - this was regal, an aging Aristocrat that has seen the best days recently slipped by. Still w/reservoir of fruit juxtaposed w/secondary elements. A beaut — 4 years ago

Fascinating wine from NE Spain: golden color w/green hue, made from Grenache Blanc w/some other white grapes I believe, amfora gave it a musky oxidized element, a lot of marine saline & minerality, tart citrus, some pucker & zingy acidity all juxtaposed w/some silky viscous mouthfeel. Well done, some white flowers, herbaceous notes, nicely structured, balanced through finish. These are the types of wines that hold my interest. — 4 years ago

Don’t know why the other ratings for this wine are so low as it’s easily one of my wine discoveries of last year. An insane wine. You can smell the acid on the nose along with lemongrass, wet stones, greengage, and just and aromatic mineral rainbow. Stunning. Smells like Grand Cru Chablis X Grand Cru Chenin. So good. A true sense of place here. A 9.7 nose. Like a scene in nature. What a palate. Huge concentration and an elegant density lead to very very strong acids and a an engaging lemon-like piquant aspect. Structured. This needs mega air as my last bottle showed. Perfect balance and just unreal purity. What textured and roundness yet juxtaposed with incredible acids, minerals and freshness. Genius! After air this gets an awesome treacly texture and becomes a liquid wine sweet tart. What a finish. That finish just cranks after air. 9.6 to 9.7. — 5 years ago

Delicious! Bdx blend w/Chambourcin really adds some personality, very dark opaque ruby w/wild savage nose, forest, herbaceous, medicinal juxtaposed w/dank ripe black/red berry fruit, accented w/vanilla & spice. So Virginia - (could mistake this for Norton) very generous and right in yo face! Smooth rich viscous supple, gobs of fruit w/beautiful harmony & balance on palate. Not for everyone, very extroverted, but for $14 this is insane QPR. — 5 years ago

Naturessence Champagne Blend

Powerful and dense, nicely juxtaposed by the racy chalkiness and snap of its acidity. Some post-disgorgement age has brought great balance and complexity. There’s ripe/baked apple, asian pear, orange peel, white strawberry, fresh dough, chalk, nutmeg, salt, some honey. Can clearly sense the 50/50 CH/PN and their respective terroirs. Kudos for purity given its low-to-no SO2 upbringing, which I find particularly hard to execute in Champagne. 5/2016 disgorgement. — 6 years ago

Clos De L'Ecotard Saumur Blanc 2017

Golden nectar chenin like a blend of Mott's Apple and Welch's White Grape - thick and viscous, hits the sides of your tongue. Little nuggets of complex perfumes juxtaposed to a juicy core. Baked apples, pears, browning, spiced, spiked with lemon juice. — 3 years ago

Mesmerizing - took about 45 mins for the nose to spring to life but boy did it - violets juxtaposed with graphite and old library notes - sexy. Palate was outstanding- blue fruits, spice box, tobacco, leather and extremely long and silky finish. A perfect wine in my opinion — 4 years ago

Such a terrific Weissburgunder. The Z man strikes again. Nose is a bit quiet off the bat. Maybe it’s a bit cold. But there is apple, mineral and some smoke. I’ll update once it gets a bit warmer. Palate is just immaculate. Ripe and rich but so precise and the limestone tingles throughout. Nose starting to get fresh cut almond slices. Such a great combo of ripe and round juxtaposed with intense jagged limestone and terrific acid structure. Such a serious wine. I sell for like $25. Just an absurd value here. Really concentrated, complex and structured. Tonight this reminds me of the 18 Brisset Cuvee Cassaneas. Out of this world. Nose has such an insane stank after 20 minutes and warning up. Sweet spices. Ocean air. Salt. This is a stunning wine. — 4 years ago

Marca Oro Rosé Brut Spumante Valdobbiadene Nerello Mascalese Glera

This pink bubbly shows nice, fine bubbles and offers a beautiful nose of cherry, strawberry, pear, apple and a hint of citrus. The palate carries those same fruit flavors, with a bit more lemon than on the nose. The acidity is perfectly juxtaposed against the wine’s sweetness. Have it with anything, but it will pair best with Mediterranean dishes. — 5 years ago

Potenti Toscana Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

Second bottle in less than a week and this is a smokeshow. Pure Cab. Such a good wine. What a nose. Tobacco, cigar, not Marlboro, awesome layered cassis, ripe berry, so ebullient, better aromas than my first bottle. This is really something else. Mint, raspberry. So complex and inviting. Palate is just so silky and structured. Concentrated like a mofo and man is it pure and juxtaposed with such intense minerality and it is mega fresh because it’s Tuscan Cabernet. Superb. Just superb. So hard to get wines like this right. Tuscan soul, Bordeaux heart, Ca cab 70’s brain. Like a Graves/St. Estephe cross. Gravelly and woodsy. Really tows that line between ripeness and freshness so well. — 6 years ago
