Fèlsina Berardenga Chianti Classico

Fontalloro Toscana Sangiovese 2012

Called Chianti Rufina. Tongue-staining tannins. A Super Tuscan that’s still 100% Sangiovese. 🤷🏼‍♂️ — a month ago

Riserva Berardo Chianti Classico Sangiovese Blend 2020

Delectable Wine
9.0

The 2020 Chianti Classico Riserva Berardo offers up scents of plum, blackberry, dried herbs, leather, cedar, tobacco and licorice. This virile Riserva captures plenty of the earthy, somber power often found in wines from Castelnuovo Berardenga. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, July 2024)

Castell'in Villa

Riserva Poggio delle Rose Chianti Classico Sangiovese Blend 2010

Poured into a decanter about 90min before service; enjoyed over a several hour period. The 2010 “Poggio delle Rose” pours a deep garnet color with a near opaque core; medium+ viscosity with light staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of Bing cherries compote, red flowers, balsamic, oiled leather. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannins and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. This is a flashier expression of Chianti Classico Riserva by Castell’in Villa, with a modern touch. However, the sense of place is not even a question. This is Castelnuovo Berardenga through and through. Drinking well now with an extended decant and will continue to drink well through 2030, easy. — 2 years ago

Podere le Boncie (Giovanna Morganti)

5 Toscana Ciliegiolo Blend 2012

Giovanna Morganti: Podere Le Boncie. She's a fine and set apart winemaker in San Felice/Castelnuovo Berardenga. Her house is the cellar, her mystic garden the vineyard where she does home-grown her own sangiovese grapes and few others local vine variety (mammolo foglia-tonda colorino canaiolo) allowed in the Chianti Classico Appellation, with such a filial piety and discipline as they were kids in a kindergarden. "Le Trame" is the name of her A rated eldest child, a magnificent utterance of Tuscany through the wine. Here's instead, her declassified sangiovese under the IGT umbrella (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) called simply, 5 - with a touch of self-irony - which in terms of grades at the School would be C or D. I do adore this "slacker" and strapping "5" for the harshness sour inborn at the wine, a spontaneous expression of a very acidic and stoney soil too! — 11 years ago

Chianti Classico Sangiovese Blend 1999

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of a couple of hours. The 1999 Chianti Classico pours a deep garnet color with a near opaque core; medium viscosity with light staining of the tears and some light sediment. On the nose, the wine is vinous with lovely notes of ripe and some dried red fruits: Bing cherry, raspberry, red flowers, Pu-erh tea, porchini, dried green herbs, a whiff of varnish (letting you know it’s Italian), old leather and wood and gravelly, iron rich earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+. This 27 year old CC is sensational and further proof that Sangiovese rewards the patient. Drink now through 2039. — 2 months ago

Tenuta di Renieri

Chianti Classico Sangiovese 2022

Tenuta di Renieri – Chianti Classico 2022
Castelnuovo Berardenga, Tuscany 🇮🇹

Overview
A traditionally styled Chianti Classico, this wine highlights the Sangiovese grape in its most authentic form. From the Berardenga subzone, known for producing some of the boldest and most structured Chianti Classico wines, this bottle remains refreshingly approachable while carrying the DOCG pedigree.

Aromas & Flavors
Vibrant red cherries, ripe cranberries, and a touch of dried herbs meet subtle notes of violet and a whisper of earthy spice.

Mouthfeel
Medium-bodied with silky tannins and a lively acidity that keeps the fruit bright and the finish fresh. Straightforward but elegant, perfect for everyday Chianti enjoyment.

Food Pairings
Margherita pizza, tomato-based pasta dishes, roasted chicken with rosemary, and Pecorino Toscano.

Verdict
A lovely, cherry-driven Chianti Classico that balances tradition with easy drinkability. Berardenga’s terroir lends just enough structure to give depth, while still offering immediate charm in the glass.

Did You Know?
Chianti Classico wines are marked by the iconic black rooster (Gallo Nero) seal on the neck, symbolizing wines from the historic heart of the Chianti region.

Podere La Vigna

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2019

A Benjamin Button wine. When I opened it last night, it initially was quite disappointing. Old, browning color, nose showing little fruit and mostly dried underbrush. But it began to perk up with an hour or so of air, so I saved the rest for tonight. And it’s pretty nice tonight! Strangely, the color has gotten more youthful looking. The nose shows dark macerated cherry with a significant iron note to the earthiness. A lifted menthol/ camphor thing. In the mouth, it’s got a nice freshness, and hits more like a Chianti Classico Riserva from Castelnuovo Berardenga than a typical Brunello. Dark cherry and lots of savory minerality. A little, nice bitter note in the close. Not super deep or lengthy, but a tasty wine nonetheless. Be sure to decant and give this wine lots of air. — 2 years ago

Serious Sangiovese that needs time but holy moly. Tobacco and weird teas, earth, and some tart berries/cherries. Cellar forever and pop it when you're high on medical marijuana. — 10 years ago

Podere le Boncie (Giovanna Morganti)

Le Trame Toscana Sangiovese Blend 2020

Splash decanted about 15min prior to service; enjoyed over the course of a couple of hours and with a variety of fare. The 2020 “Le Trame” could by all rights be labeled “Chianti Classico” as the fruit is all sourced from Castelnuovo Berardenga and aged more than an enough prior to release. However, Giovanna chooses to use the IGT designation and honestly, who cares because this is awesome stuff. The wine pours a deep garnet color with medium+ viscosity, moderate staining and some signs of light sediment. On the nose, the wine is developing with heady notes of Morello cherry, black tea, licorice, and dry stony earth. There’s definitely some VA too but that eventually blows off with about 30min of air. On the palate, the wine is bone dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. This is already quite the charmer; there is just something about these wines from Podere La Boncie that I find to be so wonderful, so soulful. Drink now with some patience and through 2035. — 2 years ago

Castell'in Villa

Chianti Classico Sangiovese 2015

Delectable Wine
9.2

Castell'in Villa's 2015 Chianti Classico is a gorgeous wine that will delight readers who enjoy the Chianti Classicos of this reference-point estate in Castelnuovo Berardenga. Crushed flowers, mint, licorice, dried herbs, cedar and tobacco give the 2015 lovely aromatic complexity. The 2015 is perhaps a bit more open than young wines tend to be here, but then again, 2015 is a warm vintage that generally yielded accessible Chianti Classicos. All that means is that the 2015 can be enjoyed with less cellaring than is the norm here. As it so often is, the Castell'in Villa Chianti Classico is a wine of real pedigree and distinction.
