Double Bass Mourvedre

I am a big Mourvèdre fan. This strange little winery out of the Yakima Valley does a pretty decent job. One of the few bottles I can remember with absolutely no vintage year on it. 🤔 . Whatever. However, it is definitely worth the price point of under $20. — 4 months ago

Howell Mountain Merlot 2016

Could not resist to try one. Some critics state wait until 2021 till even 2026, others state drink now. So double decanted. Typical heavy merlot nose. Dark fruit, scented wood, gravel, pencil shavings on the palate. Drying tannins that coat the mouth. Upside potential to 94-95 when the tannins from the new oak have settled down. Will try the next bottles after 2023. Now 93+ — 3 years ago

Can not believe someone suggest to drink such a monster now. Even the next 5 years is way to early. I drink my 95 and 96 Jota now with still fruit in it. I think they even have upswing potential

Jeb Dunnuck, wine spectator and James Suckling state ready for drinking now 🙄Agree that some more age is better.

La Turque Côte-Rôtie Syrah 2004

Shay A
9.5

Opened as part of a 2-day tasting with Alex Macdonald while he was in town. Day two was a small group of us with killer wines (2010 Chave Hermitage, mag of ‘02 Krug, Selosse Substance, 1996 Latour, 2003 Mouton, 1992 Dominus).

Quick one hour double decant to prep this beauty. While La Mouline is my favorite, La Turque still incorporates the co-ferment with Viognier. 93 Syrah/7 Viognier.

Beautiful translucent ruby in the glass. As I get with certain Cote Rotie wines (especially Guigal), barbecue and bacon fat can be overwhelming when young, but this has channeled a really balanced profile. Aromatic notes of smoked meat, cherry liqueur, and espresso. Beautifully rich yet elegant on the palate. Great nerve of acidity with a finish sporting plenty of tannin to carry this a while. Black peppered raspberries, black fruit on the palate with a little bacon and a hint of sweet/tangy barbecue sauce note (delicious). Enjoy now with a short decant or hold another 5yrs.

Fear.Movie.Lions Double IPA

Active, perfect yellow amber pushing orange hard. Big bubbled beige-yellow head that dropped expectedly quick, with so much action. Petri-dish lacing with cytoplasm graffiti. Huge pineapple nose of fresh-cut ripe fruit! Grapefruit tattoo, but little else. General lemon creaminess; a memo from mandarin. Pineapple rum entry with caramel and vanilla, baked apple, brandy-pear, classy touch of black pepper, allspice, ginseng, soft ginger slices, dried orange peel, anise, and lime. Heady and thick, cut, wiry, and sinewy, but overall, a calculated, choreographed, disciplined display of restrained power, lithe and evocative, with a smooth finish.

Ruination Double IPA

Surprisingly, I kinda liked this despite my aversion to overly-hopped beers. The nose is a straight up hop-bomb - floral, citrusy, piney. The palate's also full-on, with heaps of hoppy bitterness, but balanced by malty sweetness and tropical fruit notes (passionfruit and mango for me). Finishes crisp and earthy. Not bad, but not my kind of beer (not an IPA fan basically). — 5 years ago

Double Trouble IPA

It’s been three years since my last review of this little slice of double trouble. Loose and thorny crown of creamy white with cartoon bone lacing plus bubble font. Golden overall, but reddish tinges turn it pink. Banana bread, with honey butter, a bit of molasses and orange marmalade scented, but the breakfast stops there. Healthy dollops of of honey buoy herbs de Provence, golden apple, juniper sharpness, lemon-arabica, pecan, and extra lavender. .
