Such a nice toasty, malty red from Ancient City Brewing in St. Augustine, FL. The can says “Named after the Matanzas River, this ale pays homage to the early history of our city, when the Spanish took control of Florida from the French in a bloody conflict. Drinkable and robust, this red ale goes down as smooth as a battle against the French...unless Napoleon shows up.” 🍻 — 2 years ago
Full on wine here! Cherries, oak, leather. It’s got the works. Perhaps not as refined as some of the piedmont wines but very close. But it comes with a slight alpine freshness. — 2 years ago
Since we can’t leave our house because the air quality is so bad from the fires near us & there is still the whole Covid-19 thing raging in California, we thought we’d open a bottle of Champagne & forget about the real world for awhile. This Jacquesson Cuvée 742 is a welcome break. Like Napoleon, we drink Champagne in good times & bad.
Seems the 2020 Napa vintage is also in more peril of smoke taint than 2017. At least in 2017, most of the fruit was picked. Presently, none or very little is picked. Maybe some Chardonnay is in. Not exactly hearing good news at this point. TBD soon.
The nose reveals slightly more oxidative notes than we prefer in our wheelhouse but, still very nice. Bruised; green & golden apple, Bosc pear. Lime & lemon pulp, overripe pineapple, overripe tropical melons, cream soda, white spices, touch of oyster shell, sea fossils, saline, bread dough, yeasty notes, baguette crust, grey volcanics, light dry herbal notes. limestone/sandstone, root in root beer, spring flowers, yellow florals in mix greens.
The palate is, round, rich, ripe and lively with micro-oxygenation. Bruised; green & golden apple, Bosc pear. Lime & lemon pulp, overripe pineapple, overripe tropical melons, dried apricots, cream soda, cream, white spice with soft heat, touch of oyster shell, sea fossils, saline, bread dough, yeasty notes, baguette crust, excellent, soft, powdery chalkiness, grey volcanics, light dry herbal notes. limestone/sandstone, root in root beer, spring flowers, orange blossoms, yellow florals in mix greens. The acidity is near perfect with nice crispness. The long, gentle finish is; elegant soft, well balanced with excellent polish and persists for days.
This will benefit from another 3-5 years in bottle.

100% Viura from 50-60 years old vines from a historic estate in Baños de Rioja which once belonged to Eugenia de Montijo, Napoleon III’s wife (hence its name). Since 2017 it has been recognized as Viñedo Singular (Rioja’s equivalent to grand cru). Fermented in concrete (50%) and oak barrels (50%). Aged in oak for 10 months followed by another 10 months in concrete. Delicate nose with aromas of beeswax, chamomile, fennel and floral notes. Citrus flavors (lemon), chamomile. Quite fresh. Long finish — a year ago
Kiwi, canned pineapple, corn husks and asian pear on the nose.
Beautiful texture and balance. A richness but super bright and great lift with the acid that hits you at the mid palate and takes you through to the finish. Taste like a zesty Napoleon dessert (cream, kiwi, apricot). — 2 years ago
Stuck inside and dreaming of better days abroad or just in a backyard with friends?
This wine helped me take a little escape to the island of Corsica, the home of the one and only Napoleon Bonaparte. This is one of 2 amazing rose wines from Marquiliani. This was my first Gris rose from Marquiliani and it's been a few years since I hade the regular rose.
Domaine Marquiliani is one of the top producers of wine (and olive oil & almonds) on the island and are a small family owned and operated by Anne Amalric and her father Daniel who founded the modern history of this winery in the 1950s.
Pale and watery in color, this is the "Gris" rose. Gorgeous notes of pink citrus, jasmine florals, minerals and fennel seed, no doubt from the high dose of Syrah in the blend. The wine grew tremendously in the glass and after an hour it was firing on all cylinders. Elegant on the palate with a stunning density and length on the nose. Pure and refreshing, it appealed to both the intellectual and hedonistic side of my tastes. Gorgeous, buying more ASAP!
