Domaine Hubert Lignier

Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Pinot Noir 2001

Hubert Lignier's Clos de la Roche 2001 is an elegant beast—powerful in structure, layered and unfolding progressively, with fleshy texture, dark fruit, and black pepper intertwining. It's a very 'un-Roche' Roche. I've had AR's Roche and Dujac's Roche before, but neither had this kind of sheer power.

The 2014 DRC Richebourg exceeded expectations. I wasn't a big fan of the 2014 vintage before—it's a weaker year after all. But this one only started to open up after three hours of decanting, from 5 PM to 8 PM. I poured it three times over the evening, and each glass showed a different evolution:

· First glass: hawthorn and sour plum soup.
· Second glass: elegant rose perfume began to emerge, along with white pepper spice.
· Third glass: fully opened—red fruit, floral notes, and licorice intertwined, with a slender, lean, elegant frame—charming and refined, never cloying.

What a joyful evening. Both bottles were absolutely delightful!

Bargain Montrachet
Notes of toast and curd. +++
Kind of a chalky mouthfeel. --
Short finish. Leaves a strange coating in your mouth ---
I was hoping for more complexity.

This is like wine candy and not in the way I normally refer to wine candy. In this case, fruity but a bit too sweet. This tastes like a higher brix pick than I prefer w/ my red burgundy. The sweetness does fade some after it long sets.

Black cherries, strawberries, raspberries with some blue fruit. Eucalyptus, a pungent herbaceous quality, dry top soil, dry limestone powder, fresh & used tobacco, dry leather, dry twig, pronounced barrel shavings, soft baking spices- strong clove, understated cinnamon, nutmeg & vanillin, some grilled meats, pepper, mid berry cola, dry river stone, nice red, dark, blue florals with violets, excellent acidity and a well knitted structure-tension, needs more time to be well balanced but elegant & polished long finish that lasts minutes and long sets on dry earth minerals & spice.

Maybe, better with a good long cellaring?

Well…a couple of things: 1) 2022 was a solar year and all about the fruit and 2) holy smokes that’s young for Clos de la Roche!

I have vintages of this that are 8 and 10 yrs in bottle that I haven’t considered opening. It was strangely much sweeter than I prefer. Not by a little bit, but a lot.

@Jay Kline as good as 21 but slightly different. Abbaye, Echezeaux are tops for red and white, but NSG/VR and Aubin are right there. Insane collection.

La Roche Moulin-à-Vent Gamay 2020

Bought this 2020 cru at $50. While in Cleveland. Was assured it was worth every penny it and it is outstanding. Crushed dark fruits including fig with spices. Juniper, pine, camphor oil, leather and bitter orange peel. Truly one of the biggest and most complex Moulin a Vents I’ve ever had. A wintry wine for roasted foods. Has easily another 5 years ahead of it. — 5 months ago

Puligny-Montrachet Chardonnay 2022

Outstanding. White burgh but 100+ bucks. Worth it yes i think so for the special occasion (like when I took the 2021 to Tahiti). Too young, classic, very refined citrus fruit, faint bitterness, touch burned hazelnut (already). If you want to know what white Burgh is about and what Chard should be - this is a good one! Keep for 10 years or so. Keep an eye out for this producer - the reds are good too! — 9 months ago

Complexity hits you right away. Slight oak on the nose and palate. Fresh cut green grass, citrus, hint of pear and acacia flowers on the nose. Awesome minerality and mouth coating acidity on the palate. Ends in a medium plus finish. — 7 years ago

Pie Franco Jumilla Monastrell 2010

Delicate and refined. Not what I am use to with wines from Jumilla. However, age has likely mellowed this one out. Slightly past it’s prime perhaps, but reminds me of a nice Barolo. — 7 years ago

Domaine Armand Rousseau

Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Pinot Noir 2006

Medium light ruby , quite wide light ruby rim . On the nose shows good complexity with sous bois , truffle , cherry and raspberry. On the palate this is again more tertiary in character , with those cherry fruits complementing the earthy sous bois notes . With time this shows a mineral , stony undertow , but stays fresh and vital , with those cherry and raspberry notes . Very fine , ripe but grippy tannins . Fresh acidity and good balance , good velvety mouthfeel . This is great now though improves with time in the glass , so there is absolutely no rush here , from now and over the next 10 years perhaps. An excellent showing for this challenging year . At Auberge de l’ill, Illhaeusen. — a month ago

A comparatively thin Chardonnay, with typical notes of lemon and oak. This wine was quite tasty though and it paired rather well with a variety of cooked fish and sashimi. — 7 years ago
