Keuper Pinot Noir 2022

Lyle Fass
9.7

Nose is glorious but a bit quiet to start. Gorgeous blackberry and black raspberry. So potent. Big dark black cherries. There is an extra layer of profundity here versus the basic Pinot Noir. Lifted florals. Violets. Wow now the nose is killing it. Omg the florals are just insane. It took maybe 2 minutes to crank up to 11. Heaven. Like German Clos de Vougeot. Unreal chalky limestone in the background. Just a preposterous amount of fruit. Elegant texture but omg the intensity is just beyond. Huge concentration and power and unreal levels of fruit. Nuclear levels of fruit. This is backwards but the levels of fruit and structure just scream Grand Cru. Unreal cleansing acidity and huge limestone minerality. Nose keeps getting more haunting. It’s that perfect combo of fruit, florals and minerals. 33/33/33. Nose is a 9.8 now. Wow that is so concentrated almost painfully concentrated with the most incredible tiny berry fruit intensity and such power allied with grace. Like Cecile Tremblay. Crazy inner mouth aromas and just the most insane black cherry, black raspberry and blackberry fruit one can imagine. This is a 9.7 now but I can see 9.9 in the future. — 5 months ago

Pretty good! An interesting orange wine — Pinot grid from near Sancerre. Some oak or deeper notes made this more full bodied than expected while still being crisp and light. Would get again. Kurt wine. — 2 years ago

Punching way above its weight, it is texturally very similar to the ‘02 CdlR. — 7 months ago

Tremblay-Marchive

Chablis Chardonnay 2022

It is the perfect wine to enjoy with fish to chicken. Plenty of flavor minus the heavy California oak. After I open a bottle, It just magically disappears. And it’s a bargain given the price was just $23. — 10 months ago

Jean-Claude Bessin

Vieilles Vignes Chablis Chardonnay 2020

Pale lemon in color, this energetic young Chablis expresses precise aromas of lemon, lime, green apple, white peach with a hint of oyster shell and wet stones. Medium bodied with a zesty high acidity and intense flavors, the 2020 Chablis Vieilles Vignes from Bessin-Tremblay is game on. Drink now or until 2030. — 2 years ago

Domaine des Malandes

Vau de Vey Chablis 1er Cru Chardonnay 2021

It says Tremblay-Marchive, which I think is the estate where the fruit is from, but it’s made by Domaine des Malandes. Nose has classic seashelly limestone with a bit of brothiness. The citrusy fruit has a slight herbal edge. Crisp and balanced, though not especially deep. — a year ago

Nice, humble, pear notes and apricot, some zest. Not flashy but no errors either. — 3 years ago

Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg

Clos Vougeot Grand Cru Pinot Noir 2011

IMO, MG makes one of the absolute best Clos Vougeot’s. This one drank very youthful and primary but all the material is there for this to be a fantastic bottle down the road. It showed much more producer and vineyard than it did the vintage. There was none of the overt greenness that you can often get with 2011’s. Along with Rousseau, Dujac and Tremblay, MG’s 2011’s are very impressive.

After an initial shyness it does reveal itself after a multi hour decant and begins to waft from the glass with aromas of dark fruit, florals and spices. On the palate it’s deep, elegant and pure with fine grained tannins, excellent focus and delineation. But you can tell it wishes to resume its slumber. It often went back and forth from showing great fruit expression to then aromas of woodsmoke and savory herbs. But the herbal qualities are not at all off putting and just add to complexity. I would love to check in on this again with more bottle age. It is clear that it will have a lot to offer those with more patience than me.
