Well now. This is a treat. Pure and elegant. Solid backbone of Syrah fruit with a meatiness one expects from the No. Rhone. Really really good. Long finish. 2022 — a month ago

Needed 1 hour last night then it got reductive. But today oh man! Nose is glorious red fruits, granite, herbs and flowers. Clay, iron ore. Some blackberry as well. palate is raw and feral with blood, guts and meat. Concentrated and linear. Unreal texture and finish but needs a decade. — 7 months ago

Château Fombrauge Saint-Èmilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend 2019

Dynamite. Cork broke, but not to worry. The wine is so good. Deep, expressive fruit and bitter leaves. Earthy. Improving considerably as it breathes. And the bottle weighs 37 pounds.

New label for 21. Love it. Nose is ripe cassis, blackberry and red currant. Needs time to open but it’s very lifted, very bright and very 21. Some granite there but needs coaxing. Ok, after some coaxing we got florals, some herbals and really expansive. Gorgeous. But it will give more. Palate is very 21 and is backwards and closed. Hmmmm? Are 21’s closing? Maybe. Balanced and juicy but really dominated by its architecture right now. Great concentration and ripe tannins and major 21 classical structure. Needs air and also a decade. I will return. Some wet earth now developing and herbals but it’s slow moving. Big, drying tannins but a juicy long finish. It’s cranky. But energetic, pure and outrageous length. After 5 hours nose is all blueberries, wild mint, herbs and game. Red fruited as well. Wonderful. So elegant juicy and super mineral. Lush and soft but grippy. 9.4 to 9.5. — 10 months ago

Le Berceau Saint-Joseph Syrah 2013

A truly special site, the average age of the vines used for “Le Berceau” are 60+ but some are approaching a century old. Aging is a mixture of old and new barrique.

Opened prior to dinner; enjoyed over several hours. The 2013 pours a deep garnet/purple with a near opaque core; medium viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with classic notes of Syrah: mixed, wild brambles and then it’s like opening up a European deli case: black pepper and Herbes de Provence encrusted salami, olive tapenade, lavender, crushed rock and fine warm spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long. Beguiling stuff. Drink now through 2038.

Lovely texture, richness without flab. Mineral nose, tropical fruit on the palate. The quenching freshness on the finish really takes this to the next level. Lovely. — 4 years ago
