Gianni Brunelli

Le Chiuse di Sotto Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2010

Happy Boxing Day 2022 from 🇭🇰! Ok. Bottle is done. Meal is complete. Honest review to follow. One — this wine. Serve this to anyone and they will be thrilled with its drink ability and balance coupled with depth and refinement. It’s Brunello de Montalcino’s finest (according to Sr and Sra Martinez). While service was a bit slow — where were we to go? Nowhere other than to people watch and enjoy the show. Technically it’s still alba truffle season; one tagliatelle order later (don’t ask the price); so happy. A dual of meat dishes: delightful (though don’t leave Danny alone w pomme purée) — but at the end of the day, it is the desserts that reign supreme. The sgroppino! The soufflé! Pannetone with mascarpone cream! The box of chocolates and truffles (and a side of limoncello). Visit at Christmas, we insist. This was a lovely visit at a staple favorite. 5 stars! — a year ago

Marcel Lapierre

Morgon Gamay 2018

Without sounding too nostalgic, or bitter, I remember drinking these when Lapierre, Sr. Made them, & for under 16$. They always had a seriousness & rather proper backbone, at least by Beaujolais standards. At 3+ yrs, this was very approachable & starting to fill in its darker, more brooding character. Dark cherries, black currants. At almost 40$ now, it really is built for a longer haul. Would be worth a 5 yr check in. — 3 years ago

We can still find them for less than 20 euro back home but prices are inflating every year. 40 USD seems to be a lot! It's very good though so I can unsterdand the high demand effect 😏

The lowest price in NY I could find was 35, while most hovered btw 36-38. Lapierre I believe was 1 of the original “ Gang of Four”, which translates in NYC to demand @Daniel M

Clos Mogador

Nelin Priorat White Blend 2017

David T
9.3

Perhaps, our favorite non Burgundy white. It is unique among whites.

Also, one of the best afternoons we’ve enjoyed. Appointments at Clos Mogador & Erasmus. Then, lunch looking back at both properties from Amcis. A great meal we would give two Michelin stars. This wine and a custom four course for two for only 70 Euros in 2015. Fantastic restaurant. A must do in Priorat.

The nose reveals; ripe & slightly sour pineapple, lemon chiffon, mix of well extracted stone fruits, notes of lime candy, banana peel, slight burnt brown sugar, blend of chalky minerals, volcanics, chamomile, vanilla bean notes, well cooked toast, sandy dry top soil, fennel (grows everywhere), tree bark with sap, mix of dark & white spice w/ white dominate and a fields of spring flowers.

The body is full & round with good viscosity. slightly sour pineapple, lemon chiffon, mix of well extracted stone fruits, golden apple to cider, tropical melons, kiwi, notes of lime candy, banana peel, fringes of marmalade, slight sugar in the raw, blend of white, chalky minerals, mint, volcanics, crushed dry sandstone, saline, chamomile, vanilla bean notes, well cooked toast, dry herbs, sandy dry top soil, fennel (grows everywhere), tree bark with sap, mix of dark & white spice w/ white dominate and a fields of perfume spring flowers with mixed greens. The acidity is round and rushes like a river. The long, rich, well knitted & balanced, polished & elegant finish goes on & on ending persistently w/ sweet white spice.

The 2017 is different than the earlier vintages we’ve had. It needs another two years in bottle. If you drink now, fully chill and decant 2 hours.

@Sofia Jalilie @ES Faiello Highly recommend the movie “Dreaming of Wine” which tells the story of the revitalising of Priorat by Rene Barbier, Alvaro Palacios, Daphne Glorian and others. A wonderful short Doco. Prompted me to have a Clos Mogador for Sunday lunch. Would love to have a L’Ermite one day but is incredibly expensive.
