Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 1986

Backward mountain fruit, but not as tannic as I’d expected, though this should easily last another 25 years, old school Cal Cabernet (13% ABV) that I long for!! — 4 years ago

Laurel Glen Vineyard

Counterpoint Sonoma Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 1995

Structured and somewhat tannic still, still some primary fruit but I worry the tannins will outlast the fruit, impressive showing for the second wine of Laurel Glen, our good steaks are effectively cutting the tannins, very good Cal Cab!! — a year ago

@Ira Schwartz, I also had a 1986 Laurel Glen Cabernet next to the bottle above, will consume that soon! And, for @Tom Casagrande, this 1995 Counterpoint was 12.5% ABV!!

Gawd, I miss the old Patrick Campbell Laurel Glen efforts. Difficult to find his main label efforts.

Inglenook

Cask Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 1961

Cask J1. Dark blackish tawny color. Very much opaque. Wispy, rustic nose. Notes of charcoal, roses, mocha, cola, vanilla, and charred barrel. Seems very old to me. Is it fortified? While I'm trying to ascertain what this might be, it's revealed as old school Cal Cab. Pretty impressive stuff. — 5 years ago

Nicholson Jones

St. Helena Sauvignon Blanc 2016

One of my favorite small production wine, 300 cases. Cal Nicholson spent his youth in So. CA & after a long marketing career he hung up his spurs to follow his 2 real interests in life – surfing & wine making. Jones is the maiden name of Cal’s wife Pam. A wonderful wine. Aromas of lemon citrus with herb, stone & tropical fruits. Palate, peach, Granny Smith apple & ripe melon flavors with lively citrus zest wrapped in lbalanced acidity. Lingering finish ending with mineral citrus finish. Consistent! Nice! — 7 years ago

Shafer Vineyards

Hillside Select Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon 1991

Tasted blind. Dark reddish purple color, opaque. Looks and smells rich. Notes of black berry fruit, tobacco, some cassis and a little anise. Chewy in the mouth. Powerful fruit and structure - this is still young. Easy to guess as a young Cal Cab, althought it wasn't that young. — 7 years ago

Laurel Glen Vineyard

Sonoma Mountain Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 1985

Absolutely lovely older Cal Cab, faint browning, still shows loads of structure, just a trace of a green note lurks underneath, but balanced with a long, lingering finish, great stuff!! — 3 years ago

Arbe Garbe

Sonoma County White Blend 2019

Malvasia, Tocai Friuli, and Chardonnay blend that has become an old and trusted friend over the past few years. The 2019 is medium gold, bit higher ABV than past vintages at 14.1, and the weight on the palate is considerable though lively and not cloying. Round, sweet, juicy fruit with notes of melon, peach, and lychee dominate, but there’s a hint of funky shroomy bottom that balances things out before the creamy, lengthy finish. I’m so happy that these Cal-Ital blends are gaining a foothold in the New World. This wine rocks with Mediterranean cuisine like lamb/chicken Kabobs with dilled herby rice and creamy hummus. Solid QPR and I’m finding that as summer finally sneaks in, I’m popping more and more white table blends. — 4 years ago

@Steve Anderson This is a cool bottle, enjoyed in my pre-delectable days. But I must say this particular pic of those three white wines would have been a very fun lineup alone, without all the other badass corks that were pulled during your evening.

Steve Anderson

@Severn Goodwin - yes, the line up of whites (also including an Aubert Lauren) probably didn’t get the attention they deserved. I’m fortunate to be part of a generous (and thoughtful) wine group and they went above and beyond in the quality and quantity of wines presented for our holiday dinner. A wonderful evening, but some excellent wines got lost in a sea of bottles. We actually decided not to open a few of the whites, including Guigal La Doriane, knowing that we already had too many bottles open.

@Steve Anderson Good decision to withhold. Palate and experience gets compromised with too many bottles, it gets tough for stellar bottles to stand in a crowd some days. Also, a generous wine group is really the best kind. 😉
