There are very few moments in my time that have had a greater call for Champagne than when I opened this, on June 3rd 2025. My football team here in the UK, Oldham Athletic, promoted for the first time in my life, which I watched at Wembley. I know this seems quite trivial and meaningless to most of you, but I must document it here, so please indulge me. Up the Latics!
As for the wine, this was a hasty cellar pull and I didn’t want anything OTT. But isn’t Taittinger fantastic? For me, one of the best Grandes Marques pound-for-pound. This bottle had a bit of age too. Really superb, drinkable stuff. — 24 days ago
2008: a very bright young feeling champagne at 17yrs of age. A resolute acidity carries the brioche and white fruits along! I am unapologetic about my fervor for Dom. — 20 days ago
Quite young looking lemon , just a hint of gold . very fine bubbles , that dissipate quiet quickly in a white wine glass . Lots of roasted nuts , toasted bread , caramel , and a oyster shell , caramelised lemon peel , saffron , lemongrass and a hint of curry . On the palate this has more of the caramel notes , with saffron , some lemon, mineral a quite tight , slightly astringent acidity and mineral finish. Not overly intense but quite good length , with mineral , oyster shell , toasty , brioche finish . This is fully mature and is at peak in magnum , drink now and over the next 5 -10 years . Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of an hour or so. No formal notes due to the setting. The 2009 seems to break from the reputation of the vintage with a freshness and verve that surprises. The typical quality of Cristal is there with its persistent mousse and attractive texture. Good acid too. Pretty tasty stuff and I’m not sure I would ever turn down a glass of this. Drink now through 2039. — 8 days ago
