Barossa Valley

Oscar's Estate Vineyard

Shiraz 2015

Gifted by a client, surprisingly good Australian Shiraz. Royal purple colour with a deep core. The added Viognier really brightens the nose with generous aromas of woodland fruit as well as rosemary, pepper, black cherry and blackberry. The flavours are bold and brambly with cool dark fruit, wet soil and bark. I’m getting side notes of pepper, vanilla and cedar. Heat from the alcohol is in check but lingers a bit on the palate. — 2 days ago

Glaetzer

Amon-Ra Barossa Valley Unfiltered Shiraz 2013

A truck load of blackberries, baking spices and balsamic. The mouthfeel is luxurious, like wrapping you palate in velvet. A thick, massive wine and yet, it stops short of ponderous. Not really my style of wine but undeniably well made. Would be really good with grilled meat. Can drink now or years and years to come. — 19 days ago

Avatar Barossa Valley Grenache Blend 2016

Came to this after a couple of hours decanting. Black fruited, spice, earthy, oaky, nice savoury finish with fine drying tannin. Less ’grenachy’ than I remember, perhaps the air brought out the Shiraz/Mataro flavours. Delicious. — 4 days ago

Yalumba

The Signature Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz 2005

Yalumbas Signature Series always produces a faithful rendition of the Cabernet Shiraz blend - the Cab in the slight majority. Nose of mint and black fruits. Quite dense - still with a short term future despite some professional opinions on the drinking window. On the palate blackberry - soft tannins nearly fully resolved. Nearly as good as Penfolds Bin 389 without the cellaring future. — 9 days ago

Two Hands

Gnarly Dudes Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016

I recently review the 2016 Angels’ Share Shiraz, however the Gnarly Dudes packs a bigger punch. Deep and dark purple color with aromas of fresh blue/red fruits with spicy notes. The palate revealed rich ripe fruits, plum and blueberry with firm tannins and acidity to match. I noted some cacao, toasty oak, vanilla and black pepper on a lingering finish. If you open a bottle, give the wine a few minutes to let it approach it’s beauty. — 11 days ago

Elderton

E Series Chardonnay 2017

Choosing the next Downs Club White wine from 44 masked entries. Great balance between fruit and oak - the former in the peaches/stone fruit style. Very balanced. Amazing QPR selling for $15 on the Elderton web site with a LUC to the Club at under $10. My choice on the night but sadly democracy prevailed and another wine got the nod. — 19 days ago

Ares Barossa Valley Shiraz 2013

I met Michael Twelftree and we were discussing his flagship Shiraz, Ares, representing the very best parcels in each vintage and is sselected through an intense barrel classification process. A big powerful wine with complex aromas. On the palate blackberry and ripe cherry flavors, smoky oak, great balance, fine tannins, lingering endind with fruit and oak. Has room to age. Very nice. Tasting Sample. — 9 days ago

Rockford

Riesling 2001

Opened about 6/7 bottles in a night
They went from badly corked to a marvelous gracely aged riesling
From lime peel , caramelised lemon to ginger, nutmeg or even hints of curry
A bunch of selected mixed herbs was there too: from sage to Thai mint, and so much more that I made a beautiful looking paint(in my mind at least)
Never too sweet and reasonably long aftertaste, which replicates the above notes again

The Grapes of Ross

Off His Block Grenache Shiraz 2013

Ordered from the restaurant wine list. $48 Australian dollars including tax makes this a good deal. Pleasant enough with my chicken curry dish. The Lord Lybdoch restaurant wasn’t as “Lordy” as I was expecting. Only two dinner restaurants in this small Barossa village but the food surpassed expectations. — 8 days ago

GSM Barossa Valley Grenache Blend 2015

This was the only kind of stand out at a tiny hole in the wall LQ store. With all the usual commercial brands I chose this one out of desperation. Not a bad find for the price. Had good standard GSM notes. Slight chill was helpful. Surprisingly balanced. — 22 days ago
