Superiore Barbera d'Asti

Outstanding Barbera d’Asti with my friend Cristiano on my last day in Italy: paired it with bagna cauda, topinambur, pepper, celery, salame al Barolo, prosciutto crudo, tuma from the mountains and vitello tonnato — 4 years ago

Il Falchetto

Superiore Bricco Paradiso Barbera d'Asti 2019

Tenuta Il Falchetto Bricco Paradiso Barbera d’Asti Superiore DOCG 2019: Medium-bodied. High acidity. Approachable tannins. Dark fruits. Spice. Oak. Flavorful long finish. Had this wine a few weeks ago at the Slow Wine SF event and I am still talking about it today: The color! The taste! The nose! Such an exceptional wine. Hands down my new favorite Barbera! Great weekend to all! Cheers🍷 — 4 years ago

Damilano

Zero Sette Barbera d'Asti DOCG 2023

Damilano “Zero Sette” Barbera d’Asti 2023
Piemonte, Italy 🇮🇹

Overview
A surprisingly dark and polished expression of Barbera that completely overdelivers on texture and drinkability. While Barbera is often associated with bright acidity and lighter-bodied styles, this bottling leans deeper, smoother, and more structured without losing the grape’s vibrant core. A modern and incredibly approachable Piemonte red that can easily fool blind tasters at first glance.

Aromas & Flavors
Ripe black cherry, plum, blackberry compote, and subtle blueberry notes dominate the profile, followed by hints of cocoa, sweet spice, soft vanilla, and delicate earthy undertones. The fruit feels generous and smooth, yet balanced enough to avoid becoming heavy or jammy.

Mouthfeel
Medium to full-bodied with an excellent polished texture and silky mouthfeel. Very smooth tannins with Barbera’s naturally elevated acidity keeping the wine lively and fresh. The finish is persistent, rounded, and dangerously easy to revisit.

Food Pairings
Excellent with pasta Bolognese, mushroom risotto, grilled sausages, pizza with spicy salami, braised short ribs, or aged Pecorino cheeses.

Verdict
This bottle twists expectations in the best possible way. Richer, darker, and smoother than many traditional Barberas, yet still maintaining enough freshness and balance to remain highly enjoyable. A compelling modern Barbera that drinks incredibly well young.

Did You Know?
Barbera is one of Piemonte’s most planted grapes and naturally carries high acidity with low tannins, which is why producers often use careful oak aging or modern winemaking techniques to create richer, silkier expressions like this one.

🍷 Personal Pick
This is one of those wines that makes you pause mid-glass and go: “Wait… this is Barbera?” Smooth, polished, and very dangerously drinkable. Cheers!

Bel Colle

Barbera d'Alba

On holiday in Italy in 2016 I got smashed on Barbera D’Asti made from unbalanced overripe fruit. This wine has cured me of my aversion to the variety: it is well balanced, medium bodied with some berries and chocolate balanced out by a gentle minerality and some herbal notes. Bio and lovely 👍 — 4 years ago

Mouton Noir Wines

Horseshoes and Handgrenades American Red Blend

Combines a lot of wine profiles in this blend. Fruity without being overly sweet. Healthy amount of tannins. Reminds me of a Barbera d’asti maybe, but with a Syrah mouthfeel. Andre Mack knows what he is doing. — 4 years ago

Moscato d'Asti 2021

Wine pairing alert— or really an alert about the alert: a five yro Mocato D’Asti ( by an esteemed Barolo maker) paired with… a softly stinky, washed rind, soft, French style ( but from Connecticut) cheese. The Moscato was frothy, perky, & not too fruity to meet the cheese everywhere it went. Enough acid cut. And why wasn’t I doing this more previously? Yum. — 3 months ago

Pico Maccario

Lavignone Barbera d'Asti 2020

Barbera d’Asti achieved DOCG status in 2008. Warm vibrant Ruby color with a bouquet of berry fruit aromas and sweet perfumed herb spice. On the palate flavors of plum, cherry and blackberry with pepper and herbs, good structure, balanced with savory acidity and soft tannins. Medium+ finish ending with juicy fruit. Exceptional! Great Value! — 2 years ago

Tra La Terra e Il Cielo Barbera d'Asti Barbera 2016

2016. We really liked the way the oak rounded out this wine when compared to the slightly more tart Barbera d’Asti from the same producer that was poured as part of my daughter’s pairing. Paired with the Tajarin dalla forma finished in a wheel of gran kinara cheese. — 5 years ago
