Poggio al Tufo Rompicollo Maremma Toscana Sangiovese Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2021

2021 vintage.
Sangiovese 60 % and Cabernet Sauvignon 40 % from Pitigliano estate in Maremma, Tuscany with a southwest exposure.
Owned by Tommasi family since 1997.
Rompicolla is ‘breakneck’ but means tremendously steep and slippery slope…a risky adventure.
Soils are deep in volcanic tuff.
Stainless steel ferment and matured 1 year in 65 HL Slavonian oak casks.
Red cherries, raspberries, savoury spice, and floral.
Medium bodied but fresh and clean on the finish.
This wine loves food ….and I appreciate that.

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2017

Outstanding QPR for this #traderjoes #brunellodimontalcino. Earthy cherry, leather and forest floor nose; palate - nice balance and fine tannins. No need to be profound on this price point and the perfect bottle for a casual Hoboken BYOB pizzeria. 🍕 — 2 years ago

Poggio Verrano

Dròmos Maremma Toscana Super Tuscan Blend

On the nose a stable, dark fruit, wet leaves, licorice. A big wine in other words, this Super Tuscan blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 15% Alicante, 10% Sangiovese and 5% Cabernet Franc. On the palate there is softness, round, dark fruit, some tobacco. A lively wine with a bite. Great surprise. — 5 years ago

Castellani La Cattura Toscana Teroldego Syrah 2020

Another solid vintage of this Teroldego (90%) Syrah (10%) blend. Purple/ruby color with a dark core. Fragrant aromas of jammy black and blue fruit, dark cocoa and black pepper. Flavors of black berry/plum/raspberry fruit, blueberries, black licorice and fresh herbs. Long lasting and very earthy finish. Medium bodied and bright acidity. Slightly chewy (well integrated) tannins and relatively low (12.5%) alcohol. Nicely complex and well structured. Much riper tasting (probably warmer) vintage than in prior years. Such excellent quality for the price. Thanks for the taste, Chris B! — a month ago

Poggio Badiola Sangiovese Blend 2019

This is the type of wine I really enjoy. Earthy, not too dry, not sweet. A little dry, but not to make you pucker, medium tannins, NOT fruit forward (thank god). It tastes like an Italian red wine. Served it with a bolognese-ish pasta. Worked well, very enjoyable. Sangiovese, merlot and petit verdot. — 3 months ago

Castello di Monsanto

Il Poggio Riserva Chianti Classico Sangiovese Blend 1982

This bottled was purchased at the estate last year; double-decanted earlier in the day and enjoyed over the course of a couple hours. The 1982 “Il Poggio” Riserva pours a deep garnet color with a near opaque core; medium viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is vinous with notes of ripe and dried Morello cherry, red rope licorice, my grandmother’s attic, old leather bound books and dry, iron rich earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannin (integrated) and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+ with ferrous minerals. What a lovely, mature Riserva and killer with mushroom risotto. I wouldn’t worry about this dropping off a cliff anytime soon but this is ready to drink now through 2037+ — 7 months ago

Back in Zurich, eating takeaway Thai outside! Great wine with the curry. Light, dry, mineral. Lemon, floral, pear, apricot, some mint. Dry crisp bitter finish. I had the 2020 vintage a few years ago, but I can’t remember how it compares. — a year ago

Serious Super Tuscan expression. Massive nose. Black Cherry and boysenberry seem to meld together. Hints of vanilla and lavender too with Italian spice. . A complete mouthful. Medium acidity and tannins falling into place. An absolute joy to consume. — 5 years ago

Podere Poggio Scalette

Il Carbonaione Alta Valle della Greve IGT Sangiovese 2021

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of dinner. The 2021 pours a deep garnet color with an opaque core; medium+ viscosity with light staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is vinous with notes of black cherry, espresso, black tea, dried herbs and gentle warm spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+. Drink now with patience but, to my palate, I think this will be better with a few more years in the cellar so the oak can better integrate. This is built to last well past 2041. — 7 months ago

Poggio Ai Ginepri Bolgheri Red Bordeaux Blend 2018

A very fruit-forward Cabernet S. driven blend. Lots of dark, sweet, brambly fruit, with a touch of licorice and tar/black olive. Smooth & rich on the palate w/o being plush or overripe. Nice balance & precision and finely grained, juicy tannins. Lacks a bit of depth, though, plus the 14% alc are noticeable.
A nice one though, esp. with croque monsieur.
