Patz & Hall

Alder Springs Vineyard Chardonnay 1997

Donald Patz
9.9

From magnum. This was the first vintage of Patz & Hall “Alder Springs Vineyard” Chardonnay. At the point of blending a flicker of original youthfulness with otherwise fully matured Chardonnay flavors. This is why we drink older wines. Rich, complex spice and toast, notes of tangerine, beeswax, dried apple, caramel, wildflower, sea breeze, exotic perfume, kiwi, crushed rock. A moderate yellow color. I was there when the grapes were picked. Short of help, we all pitched in to harvest. A miracle. — a month ago

Salvestrin

Le Blanc Crystal Springs Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2022

Decisions decisions… Both very comparable styles. Salvestrin is a St Helena Suav Blanc with fruit derived from the foothills and elaborated by a female winemaker, it’s got great balance and composure. Very elegant on the palate, it has this sublime honeysuckle component somewhere in the mid palate. — 3 months ago

Under the Wire

Sparkling Alder Springs Vineyard Pinot Noir

It’s not just the name of the 2018 Under the Wire Alder Springs Sparkling Pinot Noir that is more than a mouthful. This is a beautiful, multi-layered sparkler with floral notes, hints of fragrant herbs and strawberry along with crisp acidity and a subtle mousse. It’s somewhere between a white and rosé, having taken on a copper hue from brief skin contact. The Alder Springs is a great food wine with room to develop. — a month ago

Reserve Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2023

Delicious #marlborough #sauvignonblanc - Heady grapefruit, passionfruit and an under layer of green herbs on the nose. Upon first unscrewing, (+1 for easy, reliable closures;) noticeable prickle on the tongue suggests perhaps unintentional secondary fermentation. If so, it’s a happy accident as a delicious impression of grapefruit soda envelopes your mouth. Touch of grapefruit pith bitterness on the finish. Lovely refreshing alternative to more pedestrian mass-market Kiwi SB. — 2 months ago

Mineral Springs Brut Rosé Blend 2011

The extended tirage version! Beautiful color, a bit funky with almost sherry characteristics. Almost savory. Definitely opened up and integrated after a few minutes in the glass. — 3 months ago

Lytton Springs Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel Blend

Really tasty mostly zin blend. A little bit high acid and tight right when opened but was great after about 30 min — 2 months ago

Flora Springs

Reserve Rutherford Hillside Cabernet Sauvignon

The longevity this wine is capable of is shocking. The color hardly looks half its age, with a blooming nose that screams a much younger, softened cab of yesteryear. After half an hour open there’s nose of blueberry and butterscotch, vanilla and spicy peppery notes still persist! Over time a mustiness emerged, along with notes of wet wood, maybe even a little mustard! There’s even still a zippy, lingering acidity on the palate that focuses towards the tip of the tongue, either flavors of ripe strawberry, blueberry, plum and some meaty savory subtle notes, but primarily jammy fruit, with a palate that develops some woody cedar and forest floor notes and as it becomes further oxygenated. This is so impressive! — 3 months ago
