Summa Old Vines Pinot Noir 2016

Shay A
9.4

Consistently my favorite RM Pinot, this was the last of my 2016s…no restraint! No surprise, it showed the most layers but also the most in reserve for evolving down the road. For those who still have, I’d hold another 2-3yrs, or decant 2+hrs.

This was opened later in the evening alongside other wines, but at least was given a decant for about an hour before it was mostly consumed. Out of the 2016 single vineyard Pinots I’ve consumed, the easy answer is it’s mostly similar to the Summa, but just because that’s the easy answer doesn’t mean it’s the wrong one. The similarities with the black tea, pomegranate, mint, and muddled underripe raspberries are obvious but where it diverges from the Summa is with the blood orange…the citrus layers here are absolutely fantastic. A great combo of fruit and savory notes (doesn’t seem to have much whole cluster), with nervy acidity and a lengthy finish. This is just beginning to unfurl.

Champagne Marie Brut Nature Blanc De Blancs

What a treat! Pale straw color, loads of Granny Smith apple, brioche and bread. No disgorge on this wine- so light bubbles dissipate. Light and flavorful. — 21 days ago

Platt Vineyard Chardonnay 2017

straw colored, watery rim; yellow apple, lemon peel, white peach, toast, honey; good concentration on the palate with some glycerol and perhaps a bit of botrytis; medium body, medium acidity, 14.1% ABV; sourced from Platt Vineyard about 5 miles from coastline, barrel fermented and aged 15 months in 33% new French oak — a day ago

Nicole Marie Merlot Blend 2019

A very nice blend. Not quite as crisp as the cab sauv I typically drink, but a lovely blend of flavors that takes advantage of the mellow merlot base without being bland or boring. Would certainly buy again — a day ago

Domaine Charles Audoin

Cuvée Marie Ragonneau Marsannay Pinot Noir 2017

Medium dark rubi color, notes of flowers, black fruits, wild cherries and spices, perhaps some from new oak. Its complex, balanced and well done, in a modern style but no excess here. Hard to beat this quality at the price point. — a month ago

Efflorescence Extra Brut Champagne Pinot Noir

Bakery aroma. Ethereal. Yeast that is truly blossoming on the nose; moving from primary to secondary with layers of brine, flowers, cocoa butter, ocean air. Superb. Really come around nicely. 2014. — 11 days ago
