Decant for sediment and pour. Still a wondrous dark garnet with bricking. On the nose: beautiful gotta keep coming back notes of dark plum, smoked meat, cigar box, touch of barnyard funk, vanilla spice. Taste: silky smooth with brambly cherry, dirt, leather, cedar, grilled peppered meat with a medium plus finish. YUM! Still drinking well at 33 years old. — 4 months ago
Made from organically, dry farmed, untrellised vines planted in 1961. A fresh Chenin blanc that states pineapple, mineral, lemon zest on the nose. Lemon, pineapple, pear and stainless steel on the palette. Fantastic pairing with fresh garlic Argentinian shrimp. Great find! — 3 years ago
Absolutely loved this wine when it was first cracked opened. So much so that it could have easily been my wine of the night, but it took a strange turn about an hour in. What started off as a melange of exotic aromas like rose petals, black pepper, brown sugar, cherries, spices, forest floor, and even a touch of petrichor, ended up as a one dimensional nose of mostly sweet black cherries. The palate went from fresh and energetic to somewhat dull and harsh - the juicy strawberry and cherry fruit became almost sweet and syrupy; the spicy finish turned a touch astringent; and finally the acidity starting jutting out like a sore thumb. The only saving grace was the fine powdery tannins which was so satisfying. Honestly, it baffled me given my usually excellent experience with this wine. Having said that, a couple of friends have mentioned that this is typical of the Clonakilla SV after a few years - it just shuts down with air. So strange, but probably a good signal to keep our hands off remaining bottles of the 17’ for now. — 5 months ago
First time with this grape and this vintner. Color is super light. Very clean and crisp. At first sip, thought we were missing something but enjoyed it more had more throughout the evening - enough that we’d buy again at $30 and look forward to trying more from Keep. This is a wine lovers dream… It is very old, it is hedonistic, it is rare and simply put, a beautiful wine. The bottle was properly decanted and aerated for a couple of hours. The color is bright gold; initially, the nose is intense with an acrylic paint scent dominating. However the nose evolves into intense sexy notes of bees wax, honey, butter scotch, and mead wine that are just captivating; can keep smelling for hours on end. On the pallet it is more beautiful, if that is even possible, with preserved apricot, creme brûlée and an orange marmalade like acidity. It is very round, rich, sweet but never overdone. It flows on the pallet like the sweetest memory… And you just don’t want it to fade. — 3 years ago

The 1970 Palmer is a vintage that I have tasted on several occasions, although recently, I have encountered some variation, including a rather rum example in 2015. The most recent example has an attractive tobacco-infused nose, perhaps more akin to a Saint-Julien than a Margaux. The palate is medium-bodied with a firm backbone, a slight dryness around the edges and fine salinity with lightly-spiced cedar and tobacco notes on the finish. This is a solid 1970 Margaux, though I would not keep it long-term. (Neal Martin, Vinous, August 2023)
