This was delicious, and a winning blind for me. Having a baseline on the table definitely helped. Although less sweet and intense, I felt the JM Millot was in the same genre as the Métras, with similar texture, floral lift, minerality, and red fruit profile. It was the difference in fruit sweetness that gave it away as being from greater Burgundy, whereby Pinot Noir usually appears less sweet than Gamay to me. The village was definitely a lot harder to identify which made sense upon the reveal - when in doubt, it’s probably from one of the lesser communes (or Morey lol!). Fine, fresh, and energetic, I would have drank a lot more of it if not for the other wines on the table. Another to revisit. — 19 days ago
Vintage 2018 | Jean Paul Schmitt is a winegrower that makes wines of character in Scherwiller. Biodynamic. All of one plot, the Rittersberg with granite terroir. This cuvée ZEN appeals to me. It is a ‘gemischter satz’ (blend) of five winegrapes. Friendly, flint, good body, citrus and good acidity. Fine effort. — 11 days ago
2022/7/4 with kuro-shitabirame nitsuke, etc. This was a tricky one. The nose starts out very quietly - which I often find to be the case with AOC Bourgogne - even many of the best bottles. (Yes, there have been exceptions.) with time and coaxing glints of butter, nuts, lemon peel and stone emerge - this might benefit from a bit more bottle age, or at least a vigorous airing. On the palate there’s more to it from the start - some lemony bread pudding and stream stone. When looking for “bargains” (a very relative term) in Burgundy, going outside the Côte d’Or vs looking for hidden gems on the slope tends to yield different results. I’ve found more overtly pleasurable, blatantly lovable wines via the former - with the latter, you really have to dig into the wines to see what’s there. But I have had some great older bottles of the latter type, so I would love to see how this goes. — 3 days ago
Lovely wine, drinking well. Good balance and precision, poised and elegant while still providing plenty of pleasure in the form of waves of orchard fruit, floral notes and a honeyed finish. Nicely textured, layered and really classy. Very easy to like and it's pure deliciousness makes it difficult to contemplate for very long. — a month ago
