Hamelin Bay

Comparing 2 cool climate syrahs. Firstly the Salo from Hawkes Bay New Zealand made by Steve Flamsteed of Giant Steps fame. Peppercorns and spices on the nose with a ferrous note. On the medium weight palate it’s all about the pepper and spice. Love the style. We visited Hawkes Bay a few years ago and loved the Syrahs particularly the Trinity Homage. The Salo to be critical of what is a pretty good wine could do with a little more fruit. — 8 days ago

Powerful stuff. Young. Too young. On the nose, spices, roses, cassis, graphite. In the mouth dark fruit, leather, teeth coating tannins, acid. Long finish. Excellent vintage. — 3 days ago

Murrieta's Well

The Whip Livermore Valley White Blend 2017

Fascinating #livermorevalley white blend with a pronounced onion + floral nose, full bodied, citrus, peach palate with plenty of lip-smacking acidity. That nose might be a unique feature of this 2017 vintage; it might scare off some people but I imagine it would be delicious with a Chinese spring onion omelette. — 7 days ago

Swan Terrace Pinot Noir 2012

Great drinking. Black cherry, crushed flowers and a very fresh, balanced palate, like new world Volnay. Will probably last stil several years in the cellar so no rush, but drinking great now. Recommended ! — 14 hours ago

Te Mata Estate

Coleraine Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2009

Generally regarded as New Zealand’s best expression of a left bank Bordeaux blend. This is a dense Ruby red in colour. Aromas of cedar, cassis, mint, leafy and a menthol note - generally classic left bank descriptors. Quite balanced - a medium plus weight palate - medium tannins and acid. Still a good future into the late 20’s or early 2030s. Sam Kim, who is a NZ wine taster and commentator described this wine on release as the greatest wine ever released in New Zealand which was a big call at the time. Bob Campbell MW said “Coleraine doesn’t get much better than this. “ — 19 days ago

Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay 2017

Definitely somewhere on the butterscotch spectrum which is usually a big turnoff for me, but here it’s part of a sweet creamy lemon / just-ripe pineapple meringue with acid lift and a crazy long finish for something that costs 30$. — 7 days ago

Redwood Retreat

Estate Bottled Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

I think once upon a time someone really cared about making this wine, though I have no idea who they were. Velvety milk chocolate covered blackberry. Tannins gone but fruit still hangin fresh. Some nice oak used at some point. — 15 hours ago

Monte Bello Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2007

After drinking a few of these in a short period of time I’m getting more of the sense of the “Montebello” house style. This one is more restrained and slightly more austere than the 2010. On the nose, tobacco, cassis and earl grey tea. In the mouth, grippy tannins, dark fruit, black tea, acid. Long finish. Like all MB, needs time, but totally accessible now. Yum. — 8 days ago

Swan Terrace Pinot Noir Alpine Vineyard 2008

First time I’ve ever tried a Rhys Pinot I felt was really ready—I guess the 10+ year mark is the way to go. Beautiful red and blue fruit, rose petal, dried herbs, campfire and soil tones, layered and nuanced — 5 days ago

I really love this Pinot. Beautiful fresh red fruit up front with a super silky mouth feel. Ethereal and weightless. I think it has many more great years ahead of it. — 3 days ago

@Bryan Kesting I think you will be very happy with them. No hurry to open them, but I bet they are getting into a nice zone.
