Flora Springs

Trilogy Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2018

It's time for my #FridayCabernetfix.

Inky in color with a short reddish rim.

Fruity nose with black currants, black plums, blueberries, ripe cherries, light cedar, light earth, vanilla, black pepper, chocolates, coffee and pencil lead.

Medium plus in body with medium acidity and long skinny legs.

Dry on the palate with plums, black currants, coffee, oak, vanilla, vegetables, black pepper, spices, chocolates, dark coffee, herbs, tobacco leaf, leather and earth.

Medium on the finish with fine grained tannins and tangy raspberries.

This is a very nice Cabernet Sauvignon based blend from Napa Valley. Still young and will benefit from some bottle aging. Has good potential to become a really nice wine.

Good right out of the bottle, and better after 90 minutes of airtime. Really nice nose once it opens up.

Would be nice to revisit it in 5 years, however, already drinking nicely and showing nice complexity.

The Malbec seems very dominant at the moment. Spicy and tangy. Fruit forward and tasty.

Good by itself or with food. I paired it with cheeses and olives.

A blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Petit Verdot and 8% Malbec. Aged in mostly French oak barrels for 18 months.

14.2% alcohol by volume.

91 points.

Cakebread Cellars

Napa Valley Chardonnay 2018

This is a very nice Chardonnay from Napa Valley. Well-balanced and easy drinking.

Showing citrus, lemons, apples, pears, light spices, minerals, oak and light vanilla.

Showing a nice mouthfeel with nice complexity.

This is a nice surprise as it is not too much in your face kind of wine, which is what I expected.

Will age nicely in the next 5 to 7 years.

I had it by the lake. Delicious all by itself.

Aged in French oak barrels (33% new) for 8 months.

13.7% alcohol by volume.

Zeitgeist Cellars

Sleeping Lady Vineyard Cabernet Franc

Dark ruby color with a nose of blackberries, cassis, potpourri, a touch of strawberries, leather, vanilla, and an interesting sea air freshness. Full-bodied wine with amazing fruit. The tannins are definitely there, but not so overwhelming as to close the wine and kill the fruit. Finish is long and pleasant at over a minute. This is my type of wine! Celebrating my 20th wedding anniversary with this. Couldn’t have made a better choice. — 4 days ago

Great Sage

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

9.1

Maybe I’m adversely influenced by the name, but sage notes are everywhere, in a good way. Throwing lots of sediment in the glass, but overall, this is still in its prime - fruit-forward with moderate tannins. Mature black fruits combine with soft acidity. The only fault line is that this comes across with a little too much wood treatment. Consume these now. — a day ago

Napa Valley Merlot 2018

Time for some Merlot on this #MerlotThursday.

Dark ruby in color with a reddish rim.

Fruity nose of black currants, chocolates, cherries, oak, light vanilla, spices, dark coffee and black pepper.

Medium plus in body with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry on the palate with black plums, cooked cherries, oak, vanilla, licorice, spices, tobacco, herbs and black pepper.

Short finish with fine grained tannins and tangy raspberries.

This is a nice Merlot from Napa Valley. Drinks more generic than that, though. Feels like a California Cabernet.

An entry-level Napa Merlot made by Duckhorn. Has some residual sugar to balance it out. Showing mild complexity with a tangy finish.

Wine Enthusiasts 88 points.

Good right out of the bottle, and better after a couple of hours.

Easy drinking and a good everyday wine.

14.5% alcohol by volume.

Cain Vineyard & Winery

Cain Concept The Benchland Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2012

Deep, deep garnet with light purple flecks. A classic dusty Napa nose consisting of ripe blackberries, cherries, and menthol. Dusty herbs and warm spices. A touch of smoke and stewed plums. Highly expressive.

73/16/7/4 CS/ME/PV/MB from selected premium vineyards from Rutherford, Atlas Peak, and Carneros. Honestly, what else do you need to know? We all know how Cain gets down at this point. Nothing but beautifully crafted wines. Ripe and excessively smooth, there’s enough complexity here to keep you pondering the absurdities of life for hours. Full bodied and insanely graceful, there’s nothing here not to love.

Smooth and elegant entry with plums and smoked tobacco up front. So much juicy red fruit and vanilla. Herbs are plentiful along with spice. Long sumptuous finish. Drinking nicely now but still has miles to go. Really beautiful stuff.

Seavey Vineyard

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 1995

A member of our Tasting Group generously provided this bottle from his cellar. It had been opened earlier in the day, decanted for sediment and reintroduced to the bottle. In typical Tasting Group fashion, presented double-blind. Appearance: a deep ruby color with no signs of sediment or any obvious signs of age. Medium+ intensity. Medium viscosity. On the nose, notes of ripe red and dark fruits, some green pepper, some leather, tobacco and baking spices. On the palate, a mix of delicious dark fruits including currants, cherries, and dates with dark chocolate, earth, leather, and tobacco. Extremely elegant. The tannins were quite firm (medium+) and acid was also medium+. The finish was remarkably suave and lasted forever. This came across as a special wine. I vacillated between Margaux and Napa, probably with 15+ years on it but I was leaning towards the New World because of the fruit being so beautifully ripe. Damn, was I impressed when this was revealed to be ’95 Seavey. This has another 20 years of life in it…possible more. Bravo! — 11 days ago

Flora Springs

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

It's time for my #FridayCabernetfix. Here is a delicious one.

Inky in color with a short reddish rim.

Fruity nose of blackberries, black currants, plums, sweet cherries, chocolates, cedar, light caramel, vanilla, licorice, spices, tobacco light cola and black pepper.

Full bodied and smooth with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry and fruity on the palate with blackberries, black cherries, plums, licorice, vanilla, cola, cedar, black coffee, chocolates, tobacco, earth, beef jerky and peppercorn.

Nice finish with fine grained tannins and red cherries.

This young Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley is already drinking very nicely. Showing nice complexity with a nice, soft mouthfeel.

Very true to the Terroir, without too much alcohol, which I liked.

Well balance and interesting. Fruit forward, rich and extracted.

Will age nicely in the next 5 to 7 years. Showing nice potential to become a 94+ point wine.

Good right out of the bottle, and better after an hour in a decanter.

Good by itself as a sipping wine, or with food. Will pair nicely with BBQ Meats. I paired it with Camembert cheese and prosciutto.

100% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from Oakville and Rutherford, were aged in French (mostly) and American oak barrels for 18 months.

14.2% alcohol by volume.

Monticello Vineyards (Corley Family)

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 1986

A member of our Tasting Group provided this bottle from his cellar. It had been opened 90 minutes prior to service, poured into a decanter and, in typical Tasting Group fashion, presented double-blind. Appearance: a deep, slightly turbid, garnet color with some very slight browning towards the rim. Medium intensity. Medium viscosity. On the nose this was fully developed with notes of red and dark fruit, grilled Poblano pepper, leather, and sweet pipe tobacco and baking spices. I felt certain, from the bouquet alone, that we were in the presence of a wine that had seen some significant age. On the palate, a mix of dried fruits including cherries, dates and figs with milk chocolate, nuts, leather, and tobacco. Plush mouthfeel. The tannins were medium and fully integrated at this point. Acid was medium+ which provided youthful energy. The finish was long, lovely. In fact, the flavor on the finish reminded me a bit of a Palmer Twin Bing. I called Napa Cabernet from the 1990 vintage. I was pretty darned close! This bottle was hitting right now and well-stored examples should continue to drink well over the next 5-10 years. — 11 days ago
