2 hour decant (lots of chunky sediment). A triumphant inky dark ruby red with just a little bricking. Wow!......Buckle your seat belts for this Stags Leap "iron fist in a velvet glove" wine!! On the nose: BIG nose with creme brulee, currants, red fruit, touch of smokey bbq. Taste: velvety mix of red/blue fruit, chocolate espresso, pencil lead, and currants. Some slightly grippy tannins slide into a spicy tart cherry long finish. What a treat to drink this Sat. night. — 6 years ago

This is a big boy! I’m definitely okay with a high alcohol wine, but this amarone is having a hard time hiding its 16% abv. That being said, wow. Tilled organic earth and compost mark the edges of a wine bursting with dried fruit (craisins, raisins and currants), chocolate (tootsie rolls especially) and subtle herbs (mint, tobacco). They resonate like a port would, but with cherry bright acidity and enough structure to back up a BBQ. And you’re going to be drunk at the end. — 8 years ago

Strawberry jam flavors aside, I agree that this isn’t a jammy Zinfandel like others have noted. Plum skins, juicy raspberry sauce and a leading edge of semisweet chocolate add up to a wine that’s easy to drink but still tastes like quality. Time for my Friday's Cabernet fix. This time it's a California Cabernet.

Dark purple in color with a dirty red rim.

Fruity nose of blackberries, dried figs, raisins, blueberries, cherry pie, wood, earth, licorice, cloves, spices, vanilla, peppercorn and pencil lead.

Full-bodied and bold with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry on the palate and very fruity, with blackberries, sweet black plums, cooked cherries, vanilla, earth, oak, cloves, light bitter herbs, cola, chocolates, graphite, mint, spices and peppercorn.

Long finish with firm tannins and black pepper.

This California Cabernet is always enjoyable. Well balanced with nice complexity and a great mouthfeel.
A great sipping wine by the porch or pair it with food like BBQ steak.

Good right out of the bottle and better as it opens up (30 minutes).

14.5% alcohol by volume.
