Soft, lovely, bread-y nose of black currant fur, licorice, light mint forcing upward, sprouting through potting soil. Cinnamon and blueberry warmly embraced by dark bread and small specks of black pepper. Fruit tannins thickly house-painted across your front teeth in a real sense. Muscle. Licorice-charcoal, bitters, blackberry, black currant, graphite-smoke halo, black cherry, oak and cedar, wound up and closed in places, but powerhouse lurking in the shadows.

Rojo intenso. Frutos negros. Tabaco, co retrogusto duradero. Gordo. — 5 years ago
Fresh, lifted style. Floral, dried herbs, strawberry preserve. Avoids being too hot, jammy or smoke-y. — 5 years ago
Very melon-y. Reminds me of summer. — 7 years ago
Dark and stormy night. Smells mysterious and licorice-y. Plums. Cherries of the cooked and black sort. Flavor is smooth and juicy. Slight Rhône style flavor profile. Makes a nice compliment to meats and spicy faire. Plenty of depth. Fruit driven, but the backbone of Petite(s) and dark intense Tannat holds the bomb back. Just a lovely bombastic red blend from Yolo. CA wine for sure. Even hot climate CA red. But it has lots to offer. On the list with ‘The Boss’ for Yolo blend to watch. — 7 years ago
It’s nice pleasant wine with floral, bitter almond and citrus aromas. Dry, balanced acidity, alcohol and body. Quiet short length. — 8 years ago
13.5% ABV Salute to Lulu Peyraud of Domaine Tempier in France. Lulu’s father owned the vineyard , and she along with her husband took it over. Sadly we lost her in October 2020 at the age of 102 y/o. This is a blend of old vine Mataro and Grenache. Light salmon color, watermelon initially , later apple. Very nice! — 4 years ago
We recently pulled some cases out of storage, which haven't seen the light of day for nearly 15 years, so I'll have some fun posts in the next several months.
Nose has dusty cherry, dried blackberry, tanned leather, old cedar cigar box, shriveled blueberry, dried black currant, violets, mashed blueberry and dark roast coffee.
Palate has rehydrated blackberry, dried cherries, dried blueberry, dry potting soil, over-ripe black currant, chocolate powder, medium tannins, long finish; polished and beautiful!!
Paired with enchiladas with my homemade sauce from the summer of 2019 tomato harvest, local beef from Columbia Co NY; the dish and the wine lifted each other.
Could hold this bottle until its 20th birthday in proper storage, likely a little more. A perfect and supple cork pull tonight.
Listening to the beautiful vocal prowess tonight of Catherine Russell, life is good. No COVID-19 lockdown in MA yet, but it's gotta be around the corner...

Sweet on the nose, but dry and fruity (tropical, peaches, nectarines), lees-y, goes well with strong seafood. — 3 years ago
— 4 years ago
My favorite of German Blanco’s single-vineyard wines in Bierzo. Field blend of mostly Mencia with some Garnacha Tintorera, Godello and Doña Blanca from a small plot with very old vines (100+ years old) in Albares de la Ribera, in Bierzo Alto (very cold, high altitude). Co-fermented in amphora and aged for 13 months in neutral oak. Red fruit aromas and flavors. Fresh, lively — 4 years ago
This outstanding clarete by Jorge Monzón of Dominio del Águila has emerged as the benchmark for the revival of Clarete. Sourced from old vineyards in La Aguilera, it is a blend of approximately 35% Tempranillo, 35% Albillo and other red and white grapes such as Bobal, Bruñal, Garnacha and Pirulés, all co-planted and fermented together. Complex, vibrant, just perfect to spend a hot summer afternoon.
