Volatile Esuberanza

Giuseppe Rinaldi

Brunate - Le Coste Barolo Nebbiolo 2001

Nice color. No real sediment, just a touch cloudy on the last pour. Let this aerate in my glass for 4 hours before drinking

👃Red fruit but especially pretty with roses, dried fruit, tea, tar, and menthol. Just beautiful

👅Red cherry and blue fruit, tar, earth, mushroom, tea and herbs. Some tannic grip remains but this is silky. The finish is quite long with a touch of acidic bitterness. A bit of volatile acidity in the form of acetone, but not really distracting. Medium body. Composed and elegant.

Such a treat to share this legend with great friends. Sorry Vinloq, there was nothing to save as this was happily emptied🍷🍷

Pithos Rosso Vittoria Nero d'Avola Frappato 2015

A bit volatile initially but settled into a nice lifted cherry / grounded baked earth classic Sicilian vibe. This is OG and never disappoints (that bottle shape though…) — a year ago

Liaison Pinot Noir 2017

Shades of ruby slippers in sepia. Translucent, feminine, earthy - so stripped this verges on watery, but stiffens with volatile levels of acid and retains a sense of vitality. I loved this wine last year and remember it softer, more cohesive. In 2022 she's a little bit angular but it could very well be the time or the context. Salty cherries, dirty mushrooms, rosemary. — 2 years ago

@Pinotman /// Andreas it wasn’t as wonderful to me as it was first go round. I have a few of the 19s on their way to me I’m excited to tey

Agreed 2017 was a difficult vintage. The 19‘ are great.

Quite volatile upon opening but settled down after about an hour. Great with pizza. — 6 months ago

"Cuvée Corcelette" Morgon Gamay 2014

Tasted blind while knowing the list of wines. Guessed only the appellation. And it's funny cause I tasted this wine almost a year ago and my notes are pretty much the same. A sophisticated bouquet of Nordic berries, (volatile) horse sweet, cranberry, chocolate and caramel. Juicy, fresh, vibrant, medium-bodied and stylish. Very good balance.

Campagnes Corbières Carignane 2018

An impressive first run with this producer. Started off very pure fruited with high-toned black cherries and cassis, along with some light reduction that gave it a flinty quality. As the reduction blew away, it revealed beautiful stem aromatics - flowers and incense, with a strange, yet attractive iodine-like twist. Excellent structure, with chalky tannins, fleshy fruit, and limestone-derived minerality/verticality. A little volatile acidity perceivable in the backend, but it doesn’t detract from the lengthy finish. Frankly, it drank like a cru Beaujolais (would have called it if blinded), but perhaps with more weight and tannins (rougher too). Paired with some lamb tacos, this was in a league of its own. A one on the binary scale! — 2 years ago

Paiagallo Barolo Nebbiolo 2017

2023/10 with fresh homemade tagliatelle, etc. On the first day, lovely rich aromas and a palate that blends structure with transparency as only the Langhe really can, in Canonica’s left-field neo-classical way. A couple of days later, the nose had become rather volatile for me - since Canonica wines can live on the edge this wasn’t shocking, but a little unfortunate — 7 months ago

Vieilles Vignes Morgon Gamay 2020

Likely not an ideal bottle with what I felt was excessive volatile acidity. Nevertheless, the red fruits and spices were still clear, and the velvety texture was quite delightful. Finished with bright acidity and an acetic-mineral mix. Probably a showstopper if pristine. — a year ago
