Monthly WTF group recap. Theme this month was “bring something special”. Normally we taste all of the wines blind, but we decided to do a relaxed night with amazing wines at a great restaurant. Spectacular evening!
What a treat this will be in 10yrs! Very youthful right now. I don’t know how the grapes are used here, but it was reminiscent of whole cluster Pinot. Similarities to the Antica Terra Angelical wine but more spice and denser core. Lifted and energetic profile. Smoked and slightly bloodied with iron and smoky beef jerky. The finish showed tart mulberries and baked black cherries. Oak wasn’t very noticeable. Hold. — 5 years ago
Poured into a decanter 30min prior to service and enjoyed over the course of a couple of hours. The 2017 pours a deep ruby/purple color with an opaque core; medium+ viscosity with significant staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of ripe and tart black and red fruit: mixed brambles, plum, black cherry pie with slightly burnt crust, cocoa, dried herbs and baking spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and the texture is plush. The 15% is remarkably well hidden. This is one of those wines for me where I go, “How’d they do that?” But then I shouldn’t be all that surprised, this is Vega Sicilia we’re talking about. This is a natural, unfiltered wine that although produced within the DO Bierzo region, falls out of the rules of production, so it ends up with the IGT clssification. Dried flowers, blueberries, and smokey vanilla on the nose, continued floral aspects on the palate as well as fresh cherries and moist earth. Quite nice, more minerality than I expected and smooth as silk tannins. Medium finish. Price/quality relation is amazing, €15 the whole bottle at the bar in Madrid — 5 years ago
I do find the unusual blends in Mexican wines fascinating. Touch of oxidative and balsamic notes on the nose, luscious purple/black fruit in advance on the plate, firm acidity, very soft tannins to finish. #valledeguadalupe — 7 months ago
Deep with raspberry, cherry, vanilla, chocolate, since it was oaked. Smooth, very light tannins, and will do with a variety of dishes. — 5 years ago
