Piper-Heidsieck

Cuvée Rare Champagne Blend 2002

Celebrating another trip around the sun. This Piper Rare is medium straw in colour. Masses of ultra fine bubbles ( fine persistent mousse). Complex toasty aromas with a touch of gun smoke and flinty notes. On the palate Complex, Intense and Refreshing all at once. Chalky minerality with a saline note. Yellow fruits with creamy notes starting to take over the acid at 18 years. A blend of 70% Chardonnay and 30% Pinot Noir. An outstanding Champagne from a great year where the contents more than lives up to the bling of the packaging. Tempted to make a statement and give it 98 points. — 6 days ago

@Bob McDonald all good! But after 25 years living in VIC I’ve returned to my home state of SA for something of a tree change in the Adelaide Hills. Left just before the first lockdown :)

That was a good move Simon considering the lockdown length in Melbourne.

Taittinger

Prestige Rosé Brut Champagne Pinot Noir Chardonnay

Prestige Rosé stands out for its intense hue whose secret lies in the fact that it is a blend, complex & costly to produce. The blend, 15% of the best Pinot Noir from Montagne de Reims & Les Riceys added to the final blend, giving this cuvée its unique color & intensity. The wine contains Chardonnay (30%) completing the blend bringing elegance to Taittinger’s signature style. Red fruit aromas with strawberry and cherry flavors, elegant, long finish ending with chalky minerality and slight yeasty notes. — 8 days ago

The best color for rosé Champagne, so wickedly beautiful! Our last bottle until my next shipment lands between now and the end of the year. Prior notes still apply. — 4 days ago

Ayala

Brut Majeur Champagne Blend

Pale old gold with a fine mousse. Small precise perpetual bubbles throughout. Nice effervescence. A decidedly fresh and aromatic nose showing lemon meringue pie, pears, and orange zest. Yeast everywhere but never obnoxious or superfluous. Green apples and honey say hello.

This is one of the most conventional non vintage brut champagnes around. And that is in no way an insult. Few can do it with such clarity, precision, and downright cleanliness. This is a ridiculously clean champagne, it’s so beautiful. Showing plenty of complexity and freshness.

The palate displays the customary characteristics of roasted almonds and toasted biscuits. Nice minerality to go with the fresh citrus fruits. Those tart apples are really highlighted here. You want conventional, you got conventional. But in the best way possible.
