Deep, dark ruby with a suuuper perfumed nose of ripe cherry and crunchy dark plum, with slightly bark notes and maybe even a little mint and balsamic showing in the background. Light medium bodied, with beautiful flavor and well integrated tannin, there’s still SO much energy to this, with strange and fun note of things like pine needles, balsamic, pomegranate, peppery notes and ripe plum, with hints of black mulch and iron integrated throughout. — 5 months ago

As I’ve said previously it’s always a highlight to drink a Bass Phillip Reserve - Australia’s Best Pinot Noir. Nose of Asian spices, decayed plant matter/compost heap, mushroom and Sous Bois in general - a gorgeous nose. The palate is also gorgeous and of profound intensity with medium minus acid - great length and persistence. Treads the line of intensity and elegance. An amazingly good Pinot of Premier Cru but more of Grand Cru standard. I haven’t been buying recent vintages because the French owners have jacked up the price significantly / now approaching $1000, whereas I paid $495 for this 2013. — a year ago

#1000 at home, finally!

This is big, broad and bold. Hundred percent cab aged in seventy-five percent new French Oak. Limited production to just over two hundred cases.

Visibly the wine is a deep ruby color with a tight rim.

The nose is intense with dark fruit, cassis, coffee, dark chocolate, but also earthy humid forest aromas.

The mouthfeel is luxurious and enveloping with the perfectly ripe dark fruit, just a touch of dried spices, vanilla, oak, and a long savory earthy finish. The wine is dry, full bodied, ultra smooth with round but persistent tannings with medium plus alcohol and medium acidity.

This is an excellent Chardonnay keeping pace with Bass Phillip’s Premium Pinot Noir. That has not always been the case but this certainly is. Stone fruit and honeycomb with a creamy texture and medium plus intensity on the palate. Enough acid to warrant having the last bottle later in the year or early in 2027. — 5 months ago

This 2018 Rossj-Bass continues to impress with its vibrant and layered expression. On the nose, the Sauvignon Blanc influence lends bright aromatic lift, offering ripe peach, zesty lemon peel, and a delicate touch of passionfruit, all woven together with nuances of almond and a whisper of jasmine. The palate is beautifully balanced, round and texture with a medium-full body, yet lifted by a lively, refreshing acidity. The finish is polished and harmonious. A typically good Bass Phillip Estate PN from a good vintage. Mid red in colour with a tawny hint. Aromatics of stewed red fruits with Sous Bois/compost heap. Dried herbs. The palate is delicious showing those savoury red fruits finishing with silky tannins. All coming together at 10 years of age. Sadly my last bottle from this vintage. — 5 months ago

Delectable- this is the Estate Chardonnay not the cheaper Gippsland Cuvée. Restrained initially (more Chablis than White Burgundy) but with air it filled out to be more peachy than citrus. Drinking well at 6 years with another 2 plus years in the tank if desired. This shows that Phillip Jones’s expertise with Pinot extends to Chardonnay. — 2 years ago

My first of 7 bottles from the 2015 vintage and the ultra close planted Issan vineyard of 5 Hectares planted 9000 vines per Hectare. Rich red fruits with bunchy earthy notes. Not quite as impressive as the 2013 vintage (see previous Delectable notes) which Philip Jones called a freak wine. Medium to full bodied. Lots of fine tannins. Have the remaining bottles every year for the next 6 years. I ended up having the last bottle 175 weeks later on 31st May 2025. This wine was best in its youth and did not develop as hoped. This Issan Cuvée not produced any more under the new French ownership. — 4 years ago
