Buchignani Ranch Zinfandel Blend 2012

Hitting its stride. Extroverted nose. Roasted meat, coffee bean, brambly blackberry, dry gravel. Savory and with nice acidity, this is the polar opposite of a jammy Zin. Intense, iodine laced Zinny flavors. Great wine. — 4 years ago

Mount Mary

Lilydale Cabernets Red Blend 1983

At Polar’s old Australian Tasting. Dr Pete (Polar) has been a long time collector of Mount Mary, one of Australia’s Premium Cabernet blends and this was certainly an Old one. Opened as very Cowyard and manure but definitely no Brett. Less than medium weight but totally classy. Obviously past its best but I liked it - a curio. — 5 years ago

Vasse Felix

Heytesbury Margaret River Chardonnay 2018

Polar opposite to big Kev, lean lady with some saline words. Not a great match with San Choy Bow but a great match to my advent Chardonnay wine fridge calendar. — 4 months ago

Tyrrell's Wines

Tyrrell's Sémillon Vat 1 2003

The beginning of Dr Pete (Polar) Old Australian Wine Tasting. Quite pale Lemon in colour. Not giving a lot on the nose for 16 year old wine. Developing waxy lanolin notes with citric acid. Still with a good future before developing those toast and honey notes of mature Hunter Semillon. Thanks Jim. — 5 years ago

Turley

Estate Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Pretty awesome to try as you just don't see these every day. You know that feeling you have when you think a wine is going to be in one style and instead it is the polar opposite? That's what I experienced with this one. If Hi-C made an alcoholic blackberry juice box, this would be one of its prototypes. And I mean that as well as I possibly can, because this wine was solid like all the other Turley wines I have had in the past. Finishes well. At first the tannin seemed pretty stiff and the finish was a little bit abrupt. After an hour or so, there was more blackberry pie, hint of mocha, some black pepper to the finish. Nice wine. Wondering how the other cabs I see in their profile drink versus this. — 5 years ago

@Mark Flesher @Severn Goodwin How do you say no when they offer it around $40. One of the better $40 Cabs made in the Valley. @Severn Goodwin Like you we have 14,15, & 16 in the cellar.

Didn't know that about the price... that's probably one of the best value cabs at that price @Robert Evans Jr

@Mark Flesher They usually offer 2 single vineyard Cabs. Those are reasonably priced for Single Vineyard also

Château Rayas

Réservé Châteauneuf-du-Pape Grenache Blend 2009

Needs few comments. Seems like a lot of alcohol but not distracting, wild black berries , quite a masculine rayas. Years left in it. My favorite CDP together with bonneau’s reserve des celestins (the polar opposite) — 3 years ago

Château Teyssier

Le Dôme Saint-Emilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2011

Too bad I can't score 1/2 points! And both the 2008 and 2010 about 2 years ago. The 2008 seemed to be very shut down, with the 2010 being the polar opposite. This one was definitely more along the 2010 side of things, and wish I could give this one a 94.5. This is St Emilion wine with a tuxedo. Rounded structure, kind of becomes more brambly and tobacco driven towards the finish. Very polished, very open. And with its huge structure, you can hold this one for a while. I think I have one more 2008 left, but I would trade it in a heartbeat for one of these. — 5 years ago

Gasthaus-Brauerei Braustelle

Freigeist Geisterzug Rhubarb Gose

What a pleasant gose! Lively, frothy and full of energy! Lime, tangerine, rhubarb, mild grapefruit, green strawberry and grape Bottlecap candy. Tangy rhubarb and slightly riper strawberry blossom on the palate with a dry lime finish and a briny mesh that blankets the mouth in cozy, lazy afternoon comfort. It is literally the polar opposite of the label, which features a scary freigeist ghost‘freespirit’, and a seemingly haunted tower/monument in shadow. I’m sure there’s irony baked into this! Have a ghostly good time in the hot sun...or hell. — 5 years ago
