Cantine Castelvecchio

Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2016

The nose is a bit mute right now but I smell some almond, some cherry, a bit of leather (?) and there's a bit of heat coming up after a while. The palate is very delicate and rather smooth. I was anticipating a bit more dryness. Nice fruit along a strong acid backbone, very nice velvety touch on the sides, velvety tannins with a very gentle drying effect, very long finish with cherry and a bit of coffee underlined by these velvety, gently drying tannins. This is a bit surprising but pleasant. I would never have located it rightly blind. — 10 days ago

Albe Barolo Nebbiolo 2015

Saw this in the Delectable thread the other day and realized I haven’t tried the -15s with food and a long decanting. In a nutshell, high quality, too young, as expected. Light ruby slight brick color; youth- and powerful nose of not tar&roses but sharper, like diesel exhaust & Tom Ford’s Rose Prick - an excellent mix; very high acids and tannins on the palate, dominated by unripe strawberries; finish is of medium length and quite chest-burning despite the indicated 13.5% alc. content. As 2015 was very hot in the summer, one might expect overripe grapes and lower acidity, but not in this beauty. A half-a-decade or more in the cellar should do wonders. — 7 days ago

Centobricchi Langhe Bianco 2017

This 100% Viognier is a star bright green gold. Old bananas and fresh white flowers on the abundant nose. Full bodied complex palate yields all sorts of stuff: banana, magnolia petal, underripe and overripe tropical fruits, white pepper, white peach, and on and on. Finish is medium long and doesn’t fade into that darkness typical of many white Rhône varieties. Medium minus acidity, of course. This is classic Viognier. Very varietally typical in every way. Enjoy on its own or with rich “white wine” dishes , especially cream sauces or roasts poultry. Drink now through 2022. — 5 days ago

@Winston Jones - I’m finding that the regions close to “other places” (Alto Adige, Piemonte, Valle d’Osta, Lombardia) do remarkably well with varieties from those “other places.” Piemonte isn’t that far from the Rhône. I got a Condrieu in this month’s WFL case. Should be an interesting comparison.

Il Chiosso

Terre Moreniche Ghemme Nebbiolo 2009

I had guarded expectations because I was not a fan of the 08, but this is quite good. Deep nose has deep old dark library furniture scent, gravel, warm spice, dark macerated cherries, dried roses, a little tar. In short, everything you want in an aged Nebbiolo. Soft, good acids, tannins very fine-grained and almost fully integrated. I wouldn’t age this much longer though, because it’s almost fully tertiary. — 5 days ago

Langhe Nascetta 2019

Nascetta is lovely niche grape of the Langhe. I adore it. Nose is lavender, very floral, like a Crabtree and Evelyn store. Some apple, pear and fantastic spice. Super aromatic. Sweet Meyer lemon and sweet citrus as well. Palate is terrific fruit, lemon, lime, grapefruit, intense rocky mineralIty that reminds me of Germany and terrific depth. Great structure and very dry. Great mouthfeel and superbly mineral. Like really really mineral. Some citrus pith. But while being mineral it has a great mouthfeel. Super juicy and racy. Love this. — 2 days ago

Scarpa (Antica Casa Vinicola Scarpa)

La Selva di Moirano Monferrato Freisa 2006

Starts out reticent, and without fruit. Lots of leather, earth, tar and some fruit leather. The fruit grows and becomes like a plum coulis, maybe strawberry balsamic jam, but never becomes really fruity. The nose is sweet, but the palate is not. Mint and baking spice come out on the nose. Tannins need to be mentioned here, they are there in every sip. Really long and "rustic" tannins. This needs to be drunk with food. By the time it opened up, my food was gone. Really powerful nose, purple flowers are coming on, violets and even lillies. Good acids. Dark purple color, darker than most examples of its relative Nebbiolo.

Poderi Cellario

È! Orange Nascetta Blend

Like the Calcarius CA wines, this liter beats expectations. It’s my first of the E!‘s from Cellario and it’s surprisingly delicate and tame for a wine named Orange. It pours a hazy yellow and has pretty aromatics of spiced ginger, apricot, peaches, and flowers. 5 days of skin in amphora pits this somewhere between light and viscous and maybe both at once. — 3 days ago

Santa Lucia Barbera d'Alba 2017

Lyle Fass

Sick nose. Red berry fruit. Loads of it. Sense of deepness and richness. Some spice and saline notes as well. Palate is juicy, complex and has terrific freshness and so much minerality. Wow what’s this? A mineral driven Barbera? Yes it is. Great cut and juiciness with some good berry fruit but this has st Joseph like fresh minerals that are just delightful. Terrific depth and structure. Even seems a bit young, as does most very serious Barbera which this is. Long persistent finish of black and red berry fruit and beautiful minerals and substantial tannins. Really really long. after air the nose really gets going. Super complex gamey, earthy and mineral notes. Man it’s like if old school Cornas (mineral style like cuchet/Fauterie) mated with very serious Barbera. As this airs more fruit comes out but it never sheds its mineral core. This is terrific. Great power and depth. This will age for at least 10-13 years. Will be back more as it airs. — a day ago

Monprivato di Castiglione Falletto Barolo Nebbiolo 2010

This was absolutely beautiful. Gave it a 2 hour decant and probably better at hour 4 than 2 but it’s marginal. Quite a “classic nebbiolo” lighter color in the glass. The aromatics on this wine are crazy - so much dark cherry and earth and a bit of licorice. Perfectly balanced with great body and a very long finish. The tannins are there but not at all overbearing and there is good acid to keep it refreshing. Perfect with a bone in dry aged ribeye. — 4 days ago

So so pretty: apples, pears, white flowers, minerality. Great acidity! Great food wine I had it with some awesome takeout and it’s available during this crazy time: Royal red shrimp over risotto with peas 😋😋 — 19 days ago
