The misses had a girls night out so had to go for something older and funky. Big minerals on the nose. Palate is like a bloody smoked steak dusted with rust and wrapped in bacon. Can’t believe it’s balanced and not hot at 15.5%. Pax is one of the only producers that can do that with so much alcohol IMO. — 9 days ago

Sonoma-Hillsides Syrah 2018

CellarTracker users are head over heels already, yet for my tastes it’s an undrinkable acid bath. Needs years or an aggressive decant. ... As a follow up from later in the evening, this did settle somewhat in time. Shortly after opening, I had effectively double decanted and vacuvin’d the full bottle. Returning two hours later, this guy started to awaken. The nose became the boisterous, fun, fruity, herbal pleasure bomb. The acid settled enough to reveal ripe dark berries and a glimpse of something more. It was also richly structured with an energizer bunny finish. Mouth-coating with Szechuan peppercorn, like Chinese boiled fish stew. I’m holding firm that you should wait at least a couple years, or give this at least 4 hours in the decanter. — 21 days ago

Luchsinger Vineyard Charbono 2019

Young, no new oak, carbonic charbono. Medium bodied, best aired and chilled. Exotic blueberries, dried black cherries, bitter chocolate. Tart candied. Bursting with flavor. Would be great and interesting aged. — 9 days ago

Despite the heat rating, incredibly well made. No clue how he achieved this much fruit, heat and raciness, but well done...it works.

Griffin's Lair Sonoma Coast Syrah 2002

Last week in Texas. Hosted a final dinner for close friends. Been a great 8 years! This was sublime. So cool tasting Pax’s transition from big wines like this (14.5% abv) to what he’s doing now. Damn I love Pax — a month ago
