Wonderful flavors of cherry, chocolate, raspberry. Excellent tannins and a beautiful finish. I first tried this at the winery near Ashland, Oregon. This wine is outstanding. It is a total re-buy at only $35 at the winery. Only 8 barrels were produced for the 2020 vintage. Not sure what variety or varieties make this up, but it’s got a lot of character and is quite nice. Pours dark and sultry with a little age showing at the rim. Nose is earthy, with a teensy bit of barnyard, loads of rocky gravel notes, bright dark cherry (with a tart berry edge), and a little spice. Fairly concentrated and intense in the mouth. Almost reminds me of an Aglianico di Vulture with a bit of bottle age because of the rustic dark cherry fruit and rustic (but not overbearing) tannins. Some crushed rock notes too. Nice balance. Finish is lengthy, dark, and rich.

UPDATE: I looked it up and Bovale is an indigenous Sardinian varietal. Never heard of it before. — 3 years ago

This past Friday night I opened the 2017 Pala Cannonau di Sadengna Reserva. This is a 100% Garnacha from Serdiana, Sardegna, Italy.

On the nose there is strawberry, raspberry, cherry, licorice, tobacco, cinnamon and earth.

On the palate I am finding strawberry, cherry, raspberry, licorice, cinnamon, leather, dried herbs and earth.

This wine is medium to medium + body a nice smooth mouthfeel medium + acidity and medium + grippy tannins that leave you with a long red fruit earthy finish. This Vermentino delivers what I love about the grape, especially those from Sardegna. It is a smell that is more than simple salinity, it is the ocean. With flowers floating on it. The palate brings a savory smattering of citrus, along with a gentle acidity that lets us know that it is there without ripping a gash in our tongues. Seafood time. — 5 years ago

Puntodivista is a single-vineyard located in the village of Lamole, Greve in Chianti. Here, the vineyards are some of the highest elevation in all of Chianti Classico. Puntodivista is 600m above sea-level and planted to old-vine Sangiovese and “some other local varieties”. 2015 was Jurij’s first vintage working with the fruit from this vineyard and he hit an absolute piss-missile on the first pitch.

Poured into a decanter about an hour before service. In the glass, the 2015 Puntodivista presents a deep ruby with a near opaque core. Medium viscosity with no perceptible staining of the tears and some faint signs of sediment. On the nose, the wine is developing and OMG, ever so Italian!! So yeah, it’s got some VA and it’s absolutely gorgeous with notes of dark cherries, blood orange zest, flower shop, some barnyard, tobacco, pu-erh tea, dried Italian herbs, and wet rocks. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The texture is silky and fit. The finish is long and has a ferrous-cherry sort of thing going for it. This is stunning. I can’t get over the nose. The aromatics are off the chart. So lovely right now but this certainly has a long life ahead. The production of Puntodivista is minuscule with 500-600 bottles made depending on the vintage but holy smokes, the nose is worth the effort to seek out alone. Drink now and through 2035+. — 2 years ago

From 375ml. Each time I asked the Somm for the blend he added another grape. Suffice to say it was a blend of Riesling, Pinot Bianco, Friuli and Tokaji as far as I could tell. On the nose Georgie thought rose water. Add red and white florals. The medium bodied palate had notes of pear and kiwi fruit and was absolutely delicious. This 2007 was purchased when Uwe was in DC years ago, pouring samples at Peter Wygandt's store. It is labelled as "Vörösbor Vaszkeresztes Vashgey" on the front label and Sudbergenland on the back.

This poured w a surprisingly deep, ruddy purple. Aromas are complex with a concentrated/desicated dark berry fruit note and some savory, earthy, tertiary bottle depth. Tannins are resolved in this medium bodied wine. It is deeper and more concentrated than I remembered. — 5 years ago
