El Pensador

The Thinker Campo de Borja Garnacha 2020

Classic, pretty Spanish label of abstract art evoking greens and blues of the ocean. Great garnet red color. Smells like mineral water, painter’s tape, rosewood and smoked pork products. Flavors of rosewater & cherries in a rich cheesecake. Or maybe a bit of Red Zinger and rosehip tea with a bit of red grape juice in it. Very floral with elderberry jelly, raspberry sorbet and flower essences all in the mix. For a screw-top cheapie at Grocery Outlet, this is excellent, graceful garnacha. — 4 months ago

Mon Chevalier Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Wow. This wine was meh after first opening but after being argon gassed and then stuck in the fridge for 3 days - it changed.

With airtime and coming back to temp - it opened and exploded with depth and ripe berry fruit Blues.

Just kicked butt. Will be seriously decanting the next bottle.

Deus Ex Machina Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2005

This magnum was a gift from co-workers at my old job when I left to take a new one. Nice coworkers! So rich and resolved. This wine reminds me of Neil Young’s Vampire Blues. “I’m a vampire babe. Suckin’ blood from the earth.” Grenache pulled from God’s earth. Incredible intensity and length, but still entirely in balance. Length for days. Iodine, stones, blood. — a year ago

Chase the Blues Away Rancho Santa Ynez Rosé Blend 2018

Opens up with floral, strawberry and red berries notes. Upon first taste some strawberry and subtle watermelon, nice acidity going. Medium body and leaning towards the dry spectrum of wines. A bit of a bite at the end but not offensive. Perfect summer wine, had it alongside some fresh ceviche — 5 years ago

Domaine de Montvac

Arabesque Vacqueyras Red Rhone Blend 2016

My favorite region, Vacqueyras, is always a joy to save for myself when I know I’ll have a Friday night in. That way I can sit, sip, and enjoy a glass, not worrying about time passing or the pressure of people. I pair with slow old timey New York City jazz, Flamenco, or some newly discovered West African Blues, a good book, or a classic film.

As always, the bouquet is rich, drupel fruits, dried figs, tobacco, juicy plums, and even the thick vegetation of a forest in a Florida summer.

This bottle reminds me of why I fell in love with this underrated region in the first place — the body is complex. Medium to full. It’s got its own charisma. The cranberries up front drop to a smokey barbecue of artichokes, then finally a nice lemon zip at the end lingers.
