Domaine du Pegau

Cuvée Réservé Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2016

My first bottle of the 2016 and I was so excited to share it with my old friend Charlie who has been doing some great things curating the collection at the Cellar in Lincoln. Upon first pour, it was obvious that this needed air so Charlie grabbed a decanter and he pulled a sublime bottle of 2006 Pierre Moncuit to sip on and contemplate while we waited for the Pegaü to show up to the party (he also saved a small glass of Hubert Lignier Chambolle-Musigny “Les Baudes” that reminded me that I now have a sickness for H. Lignier and if it ever spreads to other producers in Burgundy, I’m in huge trouble). I digress.

Back to this latest release from Ms. Feraud. After about 45min of air this really started to open and whoa…what a stunner. Red cherries and brambles, asian spice, garrigue, not nearly as funky as Pegaü can be sometimes. In fact, this came across fairly clean. Massive structure that continued to slowly lower its defenses as time went by but cellar time is probably what’s needed most. Long, loooong finish. This is already a very impressive wine and further evidence that 2016 reminds me so much of 2010; so much quality throughout the Southern Rhône with the very best producers creating monumental wines. This is one of them. I have little doubt that the 2016 Pegaü will deliver pleasure for decades to come.
