Penfolds

Grange Hermitage Bin 95 Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon 2009

We finally had the chance to clink glasses 🥂 to celebrate our D6 results and completion of WSET Diploma!  🥳

We decided to pop this bottle of 2009 Penfolds “Grange” that we’ve been holding onto for some time… ⏰

It’s a 98% Shiraz and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon blend 🍇 made with grapes hailing from vineyards of Barossa Valley (primarily), McLaren Vale, Clare Valley and Magill Estate, all situated in South Australia. 🇦🇺

It had a medium garnet hue 👁️ with medium (+) intensity of layered aromas 👃🏻 and flavors 👄 including plush and concentrated notes of red and black cherry, cassis, boysenberry, dried fig, blueberry, violet, cocoa nibs, mocha, cedar, dill, vanilla, nutmeg, anise seed, clove, licorice, mint, forest floor, tobacco, leather, peppercorn, and meat. 👀

On the palate, it was dry with medium acidity, a lusciously full body, medium (+) velvety tannins, high alcohol (14.5% ABV) and a long finish. 🙌🏻

It was a spectacular wine, ripe for the occasion.  Cheers!

Château Lafite Rothschild

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 1996

A generous gift from Dr Mark for my Cabernet Tasting. Sure it’s a wine which will live for decades more, but it is also a treat to try it at 24 years of age if you get the chance. From the excellent 1996 vintage. A rich dark crimson in colour - dense - hinting at the opulence to come. Aromatic heady perfumes with ripe black fruits, cedar and violets. The palate was rich and decadent and very long - full bodied with silky smooth tannins. What an experience! Sublime. A few bottles in the cellar would be nice. — 4 years ago

Château de Beaucastel

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhône Blend 2017

This is now the second time in the past ten months I’ve had the chance to visit the 2017 Chateau de Beaucastel. Just as good as the first time I tried it, the 2017 Chateau de Beaucastel Rouge is a nothing short of a scintillating wine from this historic estate. A blend of Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah, Mourvèdre with Counoise, this comes off as a touch more heady than most vintages with layers of ripe boysenberry and black cherry with dried thyme alongside lovely savory tones and salty, stony terroir. The length here is quite impressive, as is the soft texture and bright acidity that brings you back to the glass for more. Wonderfully seductive in its youth, this has two decades of life in front of it. Drink 2022-2038- 95 — 3 years ago

Whitcraft Winery

Pence Ranch Pinot Noir 2016

Bright and acidic red fruits up with very unexpected old world flavors in the secondary palate. I took a chance and only purchased 2 bottles last year, I wish I bought more! Highly recommend, a great counterpoint to typical US Pinots. — 4 years ago

Henriot

Millésime Brut Champagne Blend 2008

A very complete nose of brioche, citrus and apple pie. In the mouth air is needed to really give this a chance to strut its stuff. Prominent but not overwhelming acid at first but an hour of air makes this as round as a beach ball. The palate starts to duplicate the nose with an hour or so of time. Another positive ‘08 champagne ,with upside from here. — 3 years ago

Two Paddocks

The Last Chance Pinot Noir 2016

Tagged “Proprietor’s Reserve,” the wine is entirely from the small Last Chance vineyard and is a numbered bottle. Mine was Number 48. Pale garnet; pronounced intensity aromas of black cherry, fresh herbs, violets, High acidity, low velvety tannin, sour cherry, violet, very clean lingering finish. outstanding quality. Will improve with further age but delicious now. A stunning wine. — 4 years ago
