One of the “Bourguignon” producers in the line-up, this examples from Jules Desjourneys was a clear outlier in the group. This was a 2010 and came across younger than anything else we enjoyed over the course of the evening. Popped and poured; no formal notes. The 2010 Fleurie “Chapelle des Bois” is locked up in oak but the fruit is there; dark brambles forever with some licorice as well. Unfortunately, it’s going to take a very long time for the oak to give up its grip on this one. Luckily, I think the quality of the fruit will last long enough to make it more enjoyable…eventually. Best after 2025 through 2040; which seems somewhat ridiculous to write. — 8 months ago
First bottle of Kevin’s wine club from dad. It had that classic cab note that I can never quite name. Maybe that’s just tannins lol. Makes me think of grape skins? We should have decanted. Second glass was better. But both very good! Oaky. Dried prune. I want to say boysenberry though I’ve never had one. — 20 days ago
Poured into a decanter about two hours prior to dinner. There was some decent sediment so I left the last ounce or so in the bottle. In the glass, the 2018 pours a deep ruby with a translucent core; medium+ viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. On the nose, this is absolutely gorgeous with heady notes of fresh ripe blackberries, black cherries, pomegranate molasses, tobacco, black pepper, some dry earth and beautiful integrated baking spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Beautifully balanced. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and has a satisfying melange of fruit and spice. This is fabulous with some air right now but I expect it will age beautifully through 2038. — 2 months ago
Pale lemon with aromas of citrus and tropical fruit with herb and floral notes. On the palate flavors of peach, guava, lime and pear fruit with floral and some floral tones, lively acidity adding wet stones. Medium+ finish ending, slight citrus, with fruit, herbal, floral and salty mineral notes. Nice! Not a typical NZ SB, very muted letting aromas and flavors mixing well together.
