Persiera Riserva Barolo Nebbiolo 2018

Wow. The 18s are drinking so well. Early drinking window with a 45 minute decant.

Nose: bright precise cherry. Some cherry liquor. Fresh pink roses.

Palate: silky. Precise. Cherry. Almost Perfect balance. Sweet balancing bitterness.

Stunning nose. Chestnut, ripe cherry, super floral, grilled nuts, spices and herbs. Dense roses. Like a pile of them. Really compelling spice. Just penetrating. An amazing nose with just endless depth and purity. Palate is a massive yet lithe. Unreal silky texture and so pure with explosive cherry fruit and velvety, sweet and abundant tannins. Like the Vezza Ravera this will need the whole day to work itself out. But it’s all there. It seems in 17 the better Barolos are initially very tannic then they velvetize over many hours. Awesome freshness and depth. I’ll be back.

After many hours the nose is a spice explosion. Super complex. Palate is much more supple and tannins getting more velvety. 9.5 now. From 9.4. Balance is superb and backend is slamming.

Small family run winery. This wine had subtle floral notes and a velvety finish. — a year ago

Ravera Barolo Nebbiolo 2016

Wowza.

Nose is intense rose cherry. Almost like an incense.as this opens lilacs. More delicate. More elegant and penetrating and less magnitude.

Palate is sweet spice. Sick medium cherry. More succulent than the saffirio line. As it opens a hint of chocolate. Compelling spice.

Now we are talking. I love elite 14’s and this is as elite as it gets. The top wine from Sara Vezza at Saffirio. From 1948 Rupestris vines. The nose is divine. Just divine. Soft and spellbinding. Mulchy and incense like. Amazing detail and clarity. Dude cherries, ripe mid season red cherries. Expansive. Fresh wood shavings in a wood shop. Gorgeous. Under that is a profound minerality. Also smoke. Also mesquite. Complex, layered and lively. Perfumed like no other Barolo. The perfumes on the Vezza wines are incomparable. The soil signature as well is crazy on this. The fresh, perfect wet earth is so clear. Wow, that is the height of elegance on the palate. Masterful. Unreal fruit sweetness. Wow. Like a Burgundy in that aspect. Awesome texture and has the Alex ray or tension of 14. Awesome acidity and freshness and nervy. I adore the character of this vintage. It’s a high acid, super aromatic and structured old school vintage. A modern day 1988. The nose is so good here. Just more and more expansive. Spice and mint. Balance is spectacular. Amazingly juicy and the sweetness with all the acid and structure is so compelling. Needs some age but within 3 years it should get to the next level and my score could go higher.

24 HOUR UPDATE - Palate is so deep, so concentrated, so gripping and structured that this is truly an epic wine. 9.7 now.

Sara Vezza Barbera d'Alba Superiore Villar'O 2018

Now that’s Barbera d’Alba Superiore in excelsior! Liquid black plums and some tar on the nose. Inhale deeply and you get some Asian spices on the fringes.
That palate…oh my. Liquid velvet. Dark as midnight. Plums, licorice, nice acidity,
deep, long, long, finish. Some minerals on the end.
Wowza!
Possibly better than her Barolo. Gulp.

Oh wow is what I said when I initially sniffed this. Huge Barbera fruit. Red and blue and black berries. Gorgeous spice. So fine and so nuanced. Just a tremendous nose. Shows the potential of 19. Wow, what balance, juiciness and purity. Perfect balance. Nice and grippy tannins that frame the fruit perfectly. Great concentration, depth and freshness. Such a great Barbera and also something I think will age for 5-7 years. — 4 years ago
