Il Borro

Arianna Occhipinti

Sicilia Il Frappato 2008

From mag. Had not yet tried this wine with this much age before and didn’t know what to expect but it was really quite nice. Develops kind of like a gamay or Pinot. Black cherry and raspberry still there but definitely leaner and more acid-driven and savory at this point. Dried flowers, stewed tomato, dried herbs, mushroom, maybe a little sweet tobacco and mesquite. Overall I think I would still drink this young for the exuberant lip smacking red fruit but this was interesting — 4 days ago

Il Conte Villa Prandone

Ix Prandone Marche Red Blend

Vintage 2013 ~ phenomenal cuvée 100 % Merlot from the Marche ~ lovely cherries, plums, liquorice, minerality, multi-layered. Given an hour in the decanter, it expresses a refined and velvety taste. Beautiful. ~ Paired with Angus ribeye — 7 days ago

Il Marroneto

Madonna delle Grazie Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2016

Brunello on steroids. Beautiful red fruit perfectly in balance, smooth but ending with a tang. The tannins dry out your mouth completely. Will be sensational in 5 to 7 years. — 23 days ago

Arianna Occhipinti

Terre Siciliane Il Frappato 2017

This is a beautiful wine made from the Frappato grape variety of Vittoria, Sicily (an island just off the "boot" of Italy). 😍 The region has a Meditteranean climate that is sunny, dry, and warm, supporting the ripening process, and is not far from the coast (breezes), situated at the foothills of the Iblei Mountains (elevation), offering opportunities to retain acidity and brightness of fruit character in the grapes. 🇮🇹 ☀️

Winemaker Arianna Occhipinti is known for her biodynamic and organic winemaking practices and for being an all-around amazing and bold leader in the wine industry, first releasing wines under her own label at the age of 22. 🙌

👁 This wine is medium ruby with pale garnet rim variation. 👃 On the nose, this wine offers notes of bright cherry, raspberry, strawberry, grape jam, lavender, violet, black licorice, bay leaf, leather, and nutmeg spiciness. Also delicate Brett notes. Perhaps the spiciness comes from the fact that this wine was aged in large slavonian oak barrels. It actually reminds me of a youthful Sangiovese and I just learned it may even be genetically related.

👄 On the palate it is dry. The fruit character is juicier on the nose and more tart on the palate with medium(+) acidity. The fruit character is concentrated and balanced with the nice acidity and overall structure. It has medium alcohol and medium tannins. It is medium bodied with a medium(+) finish.

I could see this wine being extremely versatile with food pairing - anything from poultry to pasta to a variety of cheeses. It's also delightful on its own. It offers a sense of place.

Occhipinti, Il Frappato, Terre Siciliane IGT, Vintage 2017, ABV 12.5%.

These wines are not made in copious quantities, if you find one, buy it and give it a try. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Il Pettirosso Terrazze Retiche di Sondrio Nebbiolo 2017

Beautiful lightness in color and structure. Juicy with warm strawberry, cherry and lingonberry flavors. The nose bergamot, pomeraner, sandalwood and a little bit of nail polish. Absolutely stellar! — 4 days ago

Il Bianco dell'Umbria Grechetto Blend 2017

Last fall, I had the distinct pleasure of tasting a wine from AnneSanti for the first time. On that occasion, it was the Rosso, served blind. It ended up being one of the more memorable wines of 2020! On this occasion, I was presented with the Bianco (not blind). The wine was very light in color. On the nose, minerals, linen, chamomile, white flowers, stony, citrus and honey. On the palate, I found it to be quite brisk but in a very good way with light stone fruits and citrus notes. There was really nice persistent acid with a long, mineral driven finish that worked so well with the smoked trout. This is a fantastic aperitivo. I want this wine outdoors on a warm day with Gabin, dZihan & Kamien and Gotan Project playing in the background accompanied by light Mediterranean fare and, most importantly, some good mates. Overall, having now tasted two wines from this producer, I am eager to try them all. — 21 days ago

Riserva Il Tauro Salice Salentino Negroamaro

This is smashing. The first 2 seconds of the nose comes with this old world, leathery vibe and then the cherry notes hit you. Just really enjoyable and complex. On it own, it's lovely but was great with spaghetti and meatballs. — 5 days ago
