What a rollercoaster, biblical vintage, and drinking now it’s so interesting. Deft balance of acid and fruit and texture. Toss in a little VA and a whisp of EA and then mushroom forest floor and no apparent oak. Black and blue fruit and a focus of tannin in the finish with some depth of flavor. One of the January ‘21 selections from Verve Wine’s Grand Tour subscription. Takes me back to Italy - like a great house wine this is better than the price point. Verve says go with pork ragu but we did Berkeley’s Cheese Board veggie pizza and it’s all there, it quenches and you want more, a perfect dinner wine. Love it. — 5 days ago

Patrimony Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

Opaque purple-black colored, unfurling to reveal freshly crushed blackberries, mulberries and blackcurrants plus suggestions of dusty soil, bouquet garni, pencil lead and cast-iron pan with gentle wafts of sandalwood, cardamom, rare beef and black tea. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is built like a brick house, strutting incredibly ripe yet super firm tannins, and it has lovely, uplifting freshness to help define all those black fruit and savory layers, finishing with epic length. Needs time, but this should turn out to be incredibly nuanced and long lived! — 8 days ago

Tuesday the 26th of January was Australia Day and a public holiday. What better way to celebrate than Australia’s best fizz Arras Grand Vintage from Tasmania. Quite light lemon in colour. Very citrussy and mineral on the nose. 7 years on Lees showing in the complexity of the palate which still shows tension and refreshment. This is a superb NV Champagne, really quite dry, with flavours of butterscotch, shortbread, lemon pith, white grapefruit, all cut along a savoury and chalky profile with firm acidity, great texture and satisfying length. For a house wine, this is a real success. — 12 days ago

Aloxe-Corton Les Boutieres Pinot Noir 2016

What a playful, lively burgundy pinot! Rose petals and cherry, hay and an earthy thing. Quite inviting. The palate is wonderfully made, a strong acid drive, a silky mouthfeel which leaves a layer of tenderness on the sides and which lasts for ever, even after the fruity notes of the finish fade away, a good mater with great balance, a good, powerful mid palate with a power house of a fruit and gentle tannins that help this silky layer expand for ever. This is a serious burgundy Pinot, and I'd like to have that every time I pop up a bottle from these parts. Organic wine. It raised to challenge of a spicy (hot hot Trinidad scorpion hot) dish which is not usually a burgundy thing. — 13 days ago
