Ronchi di Cialla

Colli Orientali del Friuli Schioppettino di Cialla 2016

A new tasting experience on several levels. Had never heard of or tasted this grape varietal, Schioppettino. I was looking for a lighter red off the menu at Settimo, Guy Grossi’s new Brisbane venture. Chosen purely because of its location in Friuli ie. cooler climate. The Somm was in the dark but the wine ended up being a revelation. Red cherry and cranberry - intense white pepper on nose and palate. Dried red florals. Love this style. Will be on the lookout for this Cuvée in the future. — a year ago

North east Italy is a hidden gem for wines.
Right up against the Dolmite Mountains, warm days, cool nights.
Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Trentino-Alto Adige really deliver.
Foradori, Franz Haas and Alois Lageder
are producers I look for.

Totally agree Jamie. I generally love cooler climate wines. In Italy the Valle d’Aosta is another example next to the Swiss Alps in the north west.

Absolutely.
Pinot Nero…(Pinot Noir) .. from Lombardy will impress you.

Michele Chiarlo

Nivole Moscato d'Asti 2018

M. Chiarlo’s Moscato d’Asti is also available in a 375ml which is a nice size to pop open after a nice meal. A slight effervescence wine with a light golden color. Aromas of sweet fresh stone fruits and citrus layered with a bit of floral spice. On the palate flavors of peaches and apricots with a grape-like character. Medium finish ending with citrus, sweet spice and honey notes. A favorite, great value! Grab a 750ml for a larger crowd! — 4 years ago

Château Pontet-Canet

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 2014

Lovely nose of slow cooked beef and heirloom pork, red and black roses, brown bread stuffing, fine tabak, vanilla-in-bread, dusty black cherry, dried black currant and espresso powder. Black olive rounds the palate in a textural wave that intensifies to charred grape gravy, very sharp forest berry, lavender, holly, pine nettle, and sage. Younger offering here but fully integrated and freshly offering dark bark and dark castings with lively fruit and floral punctuation.

Viña Gravonia Crianza Rioja Viura 2015

From MM's private cellar since she buys everything she gets. Smells like a sherry with almonds and citrus, light on the palate but with texture, and still some acid along with all the almondy goodness.

Château Margaux

Premier Grand Cru Classé Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 1926

Tasted blind. Dark amber/tawny color. Notes of brown sugar, hickory, earth, saddle leather and some cola. Sweet to the taste with lots of complexity. Fruit is still present, with tannins fully resolved of course. Guesses by the boyz are 50’s Bordeaux, but I think it’s older. I’ve had two really old bottles of Chateau Margaux from the 20s and 30s, and I think it’s in that camp so I go with a guess of Margaux from the 20’s. Bingo. We’re told this was given many hours in the decanter and then we consumed it over 3 hours… it was alive from start to the last drop. What a great experience to drink grape juice that is nearly 100 years old. Bravo and thanks Stan! — 4 years ago
