Nose is kind of uncharacteristically reticent for a Walla Walla Syrah. Gives up a bit of dark red fruit and some scorchy notes. Bit of that campfire ember smokiness lots of Syrahs from here show, but you have to search for it. Very savory and a little scorchy in the mouth, a tad lacking in fruit. I will save some for tomorrow night to see if air helps.
NIGHT 2: Better. More plummy berry fruit on the nose. Softer and fruitier in the mouth. Upping score from 8.7 to 8.9, with the caveat that this needs air to show its stuff. — 2 years ago
One of the finest Private Reserves made over the last two decades, this phenomenal wine is obviously still an infant in terms of development, but it exhibits a dense purple color as well as an extraordinary nose of blackberries, white chocolate, licorice, tobacco leaf, smoky barbecue, charcoal and a burning ember-like note reminiscent of a Graves from Bordeaux. — 4 years ago
Killer nose at 33 years young from an OK vintage. Chestnuts galore. tar, roses, melting road tar and crazy florals. Woodshop. Old Library books. Macerated cherries. Smells like elite Barolo. Just gorgeous. As it airs the minerals come through and the nose gets more and more expansive. I could smell this all day. Palate is tasting so young. Tannic and structured but with glorious cherry fruit and a mix of dried and fresh cherries. Very delicate yet big. This is so beautiful. Wow what sweet sweet cherry fruit and glorious freshness and acidity. This is terrific. Needs air as these all do. Nose now has burnt ember from a fireplace. Now after aid the complexity and finesse come in spades. It’s so elegant. The cherry fruit gets more defined. Now on Day 2 it has gotten better and better. These wines are timeless and ageless. Nose is a nebbiolo symphony with tar, dried roses, cigar box, dried cherries and huge minerality. So enveloping. Unreal chestnut. Palate is juicy and so clear. Amazing velvety tannins and so silky. Unreal wine. More finesse and better fruit clarity today. — a year ago
Boarding on perfection Barnett’s 2014 PNV wine (bottle 23 of 60) is simply stunning. Incredible nose of sweet mountain berries with a hint of burnt ember. The palate explodes with a cedar berry vanilla bomb that lingers for well over a minute. It concludes with a kiss of meat drippings and iron at the very end. Wow — 7 years ago
Very much on the dark, earthy, minerally side. So dark and full of smoky ember crushed stone that I’d almost be tempted to place it half-way around the world in Walla Walla. Palate is rich and dark, a highlights more savory minerally notes than fruit. Distinctive and good but not a typical fruity Crozes. — a year ago
Beautiful deep orange gem-like hue. Almost like the orange of an ember in a kindling fireplace.
Super fresh, slight aroma of apricots and honey, and maybe even a bit of maple syrup.
Omg. New fave alert 🚨
Super dry (which I love), slight effervescence (love), nice tannins, give it a bit of zest. Zippy yet elegant. All rounded depth. Fruit and savory. Honey blossoms.
Hit every note for me. — 3 years ago
Seductively mushroomy. Started off a little bit closed but really blossomed. Pomegranate, red apple, cherry, some charcoaly ember thing. Unctuous is the right word, but it’s not at all burdensome. Drinking beautifully but maybe should have held on — 4 years ago
